This thread has partially turned into a history lesson

I assume with regular servicing the Selecta 'box can be made to last, they probably die early due to neglect since they require more servicing than a manual.

I think this can be extended to include any CVT gearbox... -- the Speedgear in the Punto being a good example. I do wonder, sometimes, if people appreciate the different types of (auto) 'box that are out there...?

Same year as Char' and similar millage, I think this is the highest millage Selecta I've seen though

I've seen one with 145k once on ebay still going strong

They had a habit of failing early within 20k or going on forever as fairly reliable boxes. No real extra maintenance required other than oil changes tbh.

Stephen, nice find and save may I recommend a CVT oil change if not documented recently. Won't do any harm, and has a nice sump plug just like the engine

I think this is a very good idea...! I did this with Priscilla. (Does it take the same gearbox oil...?) May also think about the timing belt... -- although this probably won't be as crucial as with the Punto...!

Ask Vernon to change the metal filter in the box while he's got it down there, I know he's got a spare one that just needs cleaning and you can do it on an exchange basis (he keeps your old one and cleans it up for future generations to marvel at) so he still has one in stock

Wouldn't worry about millage, I'm heading for 90,000miles on Char' and I know of quite a few on here with more millage than me, treat him the same as Pippin' and all will be well

And so it came to pass...!

Anyhoo: just remembered that, strangely, after only handling a pair for the first time ever, a couple of weeks ago (oh no, matron...), courtesy of Alixcompo, Hal has 4x4 front mudflaps fitted...! I just happen to have a spare set of rears in Pippin's boot... -- which I think will match rather neatly....

Also -- and this is a request in the direction of our esteemed leader, Mr purple haze, sir... -- it does have one of those posh boards lining the tailgate: however, it is extremely warped.... Would you happen to have any pristine ones left, please...? :worship:

Just been looking at the MOT result, and Hal has one advisory: "Nearside Front constant velocity joint gaiter damaged, but preventing the ingress of dirt (2.5.C.1a)."

Weirdly, though, last year -- or possibly the year before... -- one of the advisories was an "oil leak": which the poor thing's still suffering from. (It's not major: as there was only a very small patch under the car, after having been stood for a couple of days.... I think it's coming from the rocker cover....) With the supposed standardization of MOT tests, it will never cease to amaze me how subjective the results are.... :chin:

I hate doing CV joints -- especially now my neck is b*ggered -- mainly because I never seem to be able to get the clips tight enough....

So how urgent is this as a job, on a Selecta...? Will I be safe driving it to Vernon's....? (Sorry: had a bad migraine all day; and my brain isn't working properly. From what I remember -- and it's amazing just how senile a migraine will make you... -- as long as the grease inside is okay, all should be well....)

On the subject of MOTs, we take all our cars to the same MOT station, yet the advisories are always different year to year, one year my CLX had one for slight play in one of the rear wheel bearings, yet it was never mentioned again and the chip in the windscreen didn't always get put down.

Absolutely fine, and on the Selecta where the drive shafts go into the gearbox is dry unlike the manuals where you'll get gearbox oil everywhere should the inner boot fail

Sounds good, very strange that its a 999cc SPi Selecta though!

Curiouser and curiouser.... :chin:

ePER tells me that Hal was produced on 26 March 1993; and the DVLA tells me that the car was registered a month later, on 29 April 1993. So far, so good (but pretty quick, methinks...)!

However, the DVLA tells me that it's 999 cc; but ePER says that it's a "141.553.2.0 - 1100 SPI"W"USA'83 CL C.A.FUJI (4X2)" model; but the "CLX" version (which I'd sort of surmised from the trim, and the black bit underneath the windscreen, etc....). "Fuji", I'm guessing, is the vivid turquoise (or will be, once I've brandished the Auto Glym...). :idea:

Apart from the 141 number, above, is there any obvious/easy way of telling which engine Hal has... (considering that I won't be collecting him for a few days...)? And what the heck does the "USA" bit refer to...? And which bit tells me it's actually the Selecta I know it to be...? (By the way: it does have the dark blue placcy bits, where Pippin's are lurid green....)

If a twin coil pack setup my money is on it being 1108cc, and me being correct all along (its been bugging me that its a 999cc injection Selecta, when I've never been aware of them existing).

Only other way is Selecta vs Selecta drag race :devil:
