General Biggest tires?

General Biggest tires?

Hi there,

I recently experimented after nearly losing control in the wet with standard 135 R13 tyres.

Currently I have 165/50 R14 on the front of my Y10 with no problems and 165/65 R14 at the rear but they are too big and I wouldn't risk carrying passengers.

[Don't ask - they were the only tyres I could scavenge]

So I would suggest a maximum on the Panda of 165/50 R14

To avoid rubbing (minimise really) I have had to fit 5MM Alloy Spacers all round. This necessitated the use of longer bolts.

I used to have a set of 155/50 R13 Alloys and they were probably the best compromise between looks and practicality. Good grip and no issues when carrying passengers. No Spacers were required.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

Martin

Hi there,

I have not touched the suspension and there is some rubbing on the plastic liner - this is after about 3 months of use.

It definately rubs at full lock but not during normal use - though going over pot holes does cause hellish noises to come from the back. - hence no rear passengers.

Hi there,

Meant to say that I did experiment with other sizes including 15".

I tried 185/50R14 but rubbing was severe.
Also 185/50R15 but again rubbing was dangerous.
195/50/R15 - Unable to steer!

The width was the biggest problem here, I am sure if you removed the liner and were prepared to grind down the wheel arches you could get wider tyres in but in a month rust would have eaten the car to pieces.

Also I had problems with the balance weights on the rear tyres hitting the handbarake cables - I had to reroute the cables using tie wraps.

To be honest, I am not happy with the safety aspect using 165/55R14 and when I get my hands on a cheap set of 155/50R13 alloys and wheels I will be changing down.

165/65R14 are hilarious to look at - all tyre, a bit like a tractor.

Martin

Excuse the rust.....
