I have the Fiat original alloys size 6J x 15 inch. The standard tyre was size 185/65 r15. I currently have 195/60 r15 on them. They now need replacing again. To save money I want to put 205/65 r15 on. Will they fit, i.e any space issues and how much will it put my speedo out? Faster or slower than actual speed?

All within spec Grande Punto tyres roll 833 (± 9) revs/ml … or around ± 1%. I believe there is a general rule(?) that 2% is OK – although I can’t cite a reference for where that view comes from.

Then a 205/65R15 would roll at 791 revs/ml or 833 - 42 (or around - 5%) … although the figures can vary depending on your specific tyre selection. I’d argue the speedo won’t be an issue – an indicated 70 will be an actual 73mph.

What do you gain & what do you lose? For example, the larger tyre could be (say) +20% heavier with increased drag.

What brand/model are you running on now? ... & do you have an un-used spare?

The current brand I'm using is Nexen 195/60 r15. The spare tyre is not the original and is not an alloy wheel, but a steel wheel.

I was tempted to fit 195/65R15, as that size is the most common (UK) tyre size - & consequently priced very competitively. But decided to stay within spec with 185/65R15 (to avoid any possible hassle with warranty/insurance issues) - & they were priced the same as 195/65R15.

How will replacing 195/60R15 with 205/65R15 “save money”? Surely the price variation between 185/65R15, 195/60R15 & 195/65R15 is negligible? – whereas the 205/65R15 (if suitable) will be +10%?

Because over here in Oz, 205/65r15 are a common size and priced cheaper. At least $20.00 per tyre less. :D I'm not bother about the Warranty as it has expired..insurance won't be an issue either.

OK - but would the 205/65R15 not be a step too far? Does it exceed the Australian +15mm dia tyre reg?

Not sure what the Australian regs are? But I don't believe that would be an issue either.. Putting 205/65r15 tyres on won't make the wheel sit outside the wheel arch.

I would have thought that the Sporting models 205/45 on 17" alloys had a greater diameter than the 205/65r15's? Or am I sadly mistaken in thinking that??

All within spec tyres, inc 205/45-17 (od: 617mm), have a smaller od than your original 185/65-15 (622mm). 205/65-15 are 25mm larger than than your OE fit (& outside NSW regs). Use a tyre calc.

So if 205/45-17 are the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle (as in the Sporting), then surely I can go upto 15mm larger than their diameter. As 205/45-17's are the largest wheel/tyre combo specified for the Fiat Grande Punto:confused:

forget this last post.. i just realised my mistake.. 205/65-15s are still over 15mm bigger than 205/45-17s
