The B&M unit on out 2013 4x4 wasn’t working so I removed it. I looked at reconditioned units but for not much more realised I could get a head unit from Ali Express for not much more. There is endless choice, it was a bit of a punt, but at £100 delivered I thought it was worth a gamble. I opted for the 2G of RAM, 32G ROM option as I’d seen on some other threads that seemed to be the minimum for smooth functioning. It cost a whopping £8 more for a rear parking camera and front camera/DVR recorder!
Fitted it last week. Pretty much zero instructions with the unit but all the cables seem to be included to connect to the existing loom. I’d watch a few YouTube videos to get a bit of an idea.
A bit of a faff feeding cables down to the passenger footwell for USBs and GPS aerial (aerial mounted on the dash) but otherwise was plug and play. Took about an hour. The display and touchscreen is really good (as responsive as our VolvoXC90) Apple CarPlay works faultlessly.
Annoyingly I’ve not attached the rear camera as I thought I’d need to take a feed from the reversing light so in knows when I’m reversing. As it happens it seems know and flips to the (blank) camera screen when I’m in reverse. Not really sure where I would attach the camera to be honest but may revisit if I get chance.
Two live USB ports in the passenger footwell now, one can be used for the front camera (will need to have a bit of a play with that). Could spend some time trying to connect the other USB to the existing socket in front of the gear stick but probably not worth the hassle.
A few bits of snagging to do:
Steering wheel controls aren’t working- it’s supposed to be compatible and there is a configuration option in the menus but with no instructions I’ve drawn blank.
GPS working well but reading in Km/h- can’t work out how to change it.
All in all I’m really pleased- I think it makes a 12 year old car look a lot more up to date and is a massive improvement on the stock stereo, much neater than a phone holder.
