Yours windscreen blast (vent) outlet plastic covers is turned around....:)

guess i need to by some red t-cut!

What alfa wheels do you have Vernon?

These are the wheels I have Craig, bought them earlier in the year on Ebay. They're 13" and the same stud pattern as the Panda. I won them for 99p :) as I was the only bidder.
Originally came from an Alfetta saloon, but apparently were removed about 12 years ago in favour of some after market alloys, stayed in his dads garage ever since.

I haven't decided yet whether to fit these to this car or the blue CLX, I need to sort tyres first anyway so will fit the five spoke alloys that came with the CLX to this car for now as they are the only ones with small enough tyres to not rub.

So Vernon, thats just with T-cut is it

Well, when I say T-cut, it's more in the way you would say Hoover instead of vacuum cleaner, it's actually Turtle wax's equivalent product. I had a little Autoglym paint renovator left in the bottle so went round a second time with that till it ran out. Then I polished it to add some protection.
This weekend i'll go round and hit the fiddly bits close to the windows and around the badges etc, as well as attack the interior, which will be much tougher .

Yours windscreen blast (vent) outlet plastic covers is turned around....:)

Well spotted jangcy, it's an oldish photo and they had since been corrected (y). Will e-mail you those pictures asap.

Phew! busy day today. Finished polishing around the fiddly bits, changed two wheels for the Mot.
Then I turned to the new rear silencer. Removed what was left of the old one, then on with the new, very straight forward. So I get in, keen to hear it at normal volume for the first time, start her up and, oh no! it sounds just the same!. Left it running and checked underneath, disaster, the front pipe has a bloody great split in it. Now where on earth am I going to get one of those at 8pm on a Sunday evening? My only hope was the system on the green CLX I bought just for the door.
It looked usable so I carefully removed it, breaking one manifold stud in the process, please let the Mania studs be ok :(. Fortunately all went well and I finally had a quiet Panda, not the best way to spend a Sunday evening though, missed Top gear too (n).
Still not done, now the cam timing and exhaust were done I could check the rest of the engine tune. Dwell angle was miles out as was the ignition timing, once done I then set the mixture by ear, haven't got a co meter sadly. Runs lovely now, pulls smooth and clean, ten times better than the trip home from buying it.

Now, 10hrs to mot :tempt:.

Well it failed the test on a couple of things :-

The hazards don't work, something I hadn't thought of checking, and it needs some welding, a small patch on each inner sill and a tiny hole in the right hand corner of the boot. I did notice these areas when I was fitting the exhaust and thought they may be borderline, but unfortunately I got an mot tester who was completely underwhelmed by Pandas and just kept hammering the areas until he got a hole, he seemed determined to condemn it to the scrap heap (n). The garage owner was impressed though, thought it was very tidy, but then he's into older cars.

So not too bad really, if I prepare it all myself and just get a mate in to weld the patches on I should still be inside my budget.

Had it passed i'd have taken it to it's new owner this evening and brought back my CLX. I have just got back from Hereford with my CLX anyway, but left her with my 750 instead until Christmas. This will give me time to get the Mania through it's mot and carry out some of the other, nicer work done before I hand it over. :D

Sorry to hear it Vernon, although you seem to be please that you know what your doing (y)

Jon.

Well it was a bit optimistic of me to expect to buy a car for £100, bung an exhaust on it and expect it to breeze through an mot. But what needs to be done isn't very much and should be done quite cheaply, so should still be looking at a £250 car by the time it's got a ticket.

Part of the fun of these little projects for me is seeing what I can make out of not very much, which is one reason why I like Pandas. Because they are so underrated by the majority of the population, but in truth are a fantastic little car, they give me a great head start. It's just a good job I'm not charging her for my labour ;).

Nah, no probs. I prefer original but do love the look of your other 750!(y)

Oh I won't go as far as I did with that one, the 750 was a bit more of a test of my abilities. My plans for the mania are alot more subdued, it is my Daughters car after all, i'm thinking more on the same lines as my old fizz.

Although I am struggling to keep one idea buried......

Gave Charmania a mini service today, oil, filter, plugs. That, along with the tuneup she'd already recieved should keep her running sweetly through the winter.
My mate is doing the welding on Monday so I should be able to get the mot next week, certainly hope so as I'd like to take it on the Christmas cruise.
I'm really struggling to decide on what little extras to give it though. I trial fitted an Alfa wheel today, and i'm sure they will look fine with what I have in mind to go with them, but I also like it's original look, so I'm thinking that anything I do should be reversible. the Alfa wheel plan will make this possible but difficult.
Then, to throw another spanner in the works, as Martin has decided to go with the white steel wheel look (y) I tried a 127 sport wheel and, mmmmm, looked very sporty in a retro way. I liked it! Also, it didn't seem to need anything else adding to it so reverting back to original mania would be a doddle.
I think I'd best approach this cautiously until I'm sure.

Keep us updated, Vernon!

Sounds like you are having fun.:)

Ha, is it that obvious.

Got the upholstery cleaner out today, but with six years worth of grime, particularly on the drivers seat, I think it's going to take more than one attack before it's decent. Also found a cigarette burn the size of a 5p piece, so maybe I should hang originality and change the seats for something a bit better, but really cheap!

Well finally got the mot today! :)

Welding cost me £80 in the end, but at least that's all the rust sorted and she now has a good solid car.

Hazard light problem was a poor connection on the back of the switch, but while I had the dash apart I decided to fit the later illuminated switch assembly from the green CLX and swap the clocks as the one in Charmania was so noisy.

The poor old green CLX is becoming more and more of a donor car so I think that will have to be it's fate. It's got a complete set of new shockers on it which are sure to end up on one of my other Pandas, this will surely take it beyond the point of no return .

Got the tax today and used it for work, about 70 miles altogether, and what a lovely little car she is! :).
The engine and gearbox are really sweet, and the fifth gear makes motorways much more pleasant, I'm used to four in my 750L. I am also enjoying blipping the remote central locking, when I remember it's got it. Having a CD/tuner is a novelty too, although I didn't turn it on today as I wanted to take in the car au natural. This did highlight a slightly noisy wheel bearing, I think it's the o/s front wheel so will have to sort that in the near future. Then there's the heated rear window switch that only works if you keep your finger on it, thanks to Jon (M.E.P.) though I have a replacement.

So that really is the end of the first chapter, she's legally on the road and in use, total cost to this stage is.............

£103.00 purchase price.
£ 20.00 fuel for collecting.
£ 31.41 exhaust tailpipe.
£ 80.00 welding.
£ 5.75 4x spark plugs.
£ 2.50 oil filter.
£ 13.10 4lts semi synthetic oil.
£ 1.99 air freshener.

£257.75 Total.

On top of this there is the cost of the tax and mot test, but I don't think it's right to include this in the total for the actual car.

I've got all the fun stuff to do now but will chart progress on that with a new thread in the classic Panda section along with my 1000CL, the two possible plans I had in mind for this car being shared between them.

I note you say the tester hammerd away till he got a hole? what hammer did he use? was it the minstry issued one? and, he was wrong for using excessive force! otherwise report him.

Yeah, it was the regulation hammer, and I think he did use excessive force, especially in the boot. I've been to this testing station quite a few times and get on well with them most of the time so don't want to rock the boat too much, but I will be keeping a close eye on that tester if I get him again .
