Good shout. I've long lusted after a DS Decapotable, which were still available for sensible money 10 years ago, but their prices have now gone through the roof

How sexy is that?!!

Drooling here, that is stunning! (y)

Personally I lust after an old 911 (964) especially one restored by Singer  sadly my lottery ticket is yet to come up trumps!

So, imagine you are as old as me - high 50's. You have a budget of £18k and you want to buy a car that will be reliable, useable but not necessarily for everyday use, special and will ultimately maintain it's value. What will it be? A serious question friends and I would appreciate your thoughts. Steve

MGZT V8 Fast, reliable and rare already. English (sort of) so will shoot up in value in years to come as both Rover cars and original Mgs vanish. You can use it everyday and it sounds wicked. See top gear episode, clarkson liked it. Also MGRV8 for the same reasons but this is a looker as well

If you really want that Rover V8, why not get it in a TVR? It can't be any less reliable than the MGR, surely, and it devours it in just about every other respect.

Emphasises my point, best for cruising the continent the Rover :D
Only 800 made of the ZT V8 Mustang engine, rear wheel drive 0 to 62 in 6.2 secs
No second thoughts don't buy one as this will push the price up and now I want one

I have given a lot of thought regarding TVR's. This Cerbera has under 40,000 miles, looks superb but just take a look at the work that someone has had to pay for! Is this typical of the marque? This is the sort of horror story that I hear when I mention TVR's.

The MG certainly has the performance but, to me still has the look of a regular businessman on the M1. I have really enjoyed hearing the suggestions - keep them coming. :D

It does now, but are you not looking for a future classic?

TVR's certainly have a tendency to be tricky to repair, mainly due to the fact that they use SO many different parts from different manufacturers, so when something breaks, you either refurbish or replace with the next best thing.

I would imagine that the stress of owning one just vanishes when you drive it though! I have always wanted a TVR S...

All that work done, and it's still got a "small power steering leak". Sounds like he's reached the end of his tether (or the bottom of his wallet).

But I suspect that RightGuard's right:

I saw a lovely red TVR S earlier this week, being driven con brio by a bloke of my age with a huge grin on his face.

Ford Capri, mass produced but how many left? Reasonably reliable, fun to drive (scary almost) and starting to look nice again. More luxury Ford Granada old square type, starting to go up in value and a decent enough car. Don't tell the Panda crew I said that about a square box ;)

It's not particularly all the work - it's more to do with the fact that the car has under 40k and appears to have needed an engine rebuild! I totally agree about the car though - it is beautiful and they appear to be at bargain prices just now.

As for the Capri - I actually saw one today, 1600 Ghia, red with a black vinyl roof. My sister had a 3l GXl in the late 70's and it was a beast. Very dangerous in the wet and we ended up facing the wrong way on a roundabout in the rush hour in Newcastle once. Interestingly, a friend has heard of my quest to buy a classic and has asked if I'm interested in a Granada Scorpio 4x4 which is mint and possibly for sale! These Fords are all interesting but I want somethhing that will be forever. I am thinking more and more of the TVR or even a Maseratti. S

TVR you would never get to where your going, never liked Maserati, Capri you would at least arrive backwards and tyres a little better than they used to be.

I think I have been looking in the wrong places and misunderstood what your after so how about Jaguar XK8? Nissan GTR?

An XK8 is a good call but I didn't know that you could get them for around 18k?

Now we're talking gentlemen! I have been trawling eBay and these appear a bargain. Theres a nice 05 model and it appears to include a blonde in the driving seat too. :D I know nothing about these cars - the claim for an average 30mpg from a 4.2 litre V8 seems optimistic. Does anybody know anything about this engine? I am going to find one locally and go and have a look/drive.

Love the comment about the Granada. It is a credit to the police drivers who used these a patrol cars for years. Powerful rear wheel drive and no traction control was/is a totally different experience.

Steve

My neighbour has an XKR convertible in his workshop at the moment (he runs a small garage) and I'm sorely tempted to take it off his hands, but the running costs are frightening (it's the supercharged one). It's a truly lovely thing, though - dark metallic blue with a cream leather interior - and it wafts along at an astonishing pace. Poor man's Aston, no doubt about it

Now we are heading in the right direction, quality to keep, comfort and by what I have heard a lovely balance between power, economy and luxury. A Jag whoever owns it, is a piece of England and all we used to be, this is a classic in the making. My work is done here, pity I can't afford one :(

"Little piece of England" Haha - love it! Little piece of Britain hopefully. It looks really promising although a DB7 is in the same price bracket. I need to do much more research and find out the origins of this V8. Steve

Oh everyone round here has a DB7 so far too common lol

My apologies I'm English and don't consider myself British, but I am proud to be closely associated with Scotland, Wales and Ireland before anyone comments.
