so guys in the end what was the actual solution?

I am in the same boat as I have just replaced my starter motor on my stilo 1.2 3dr 2002. The wires are the same for me but cannot remember which wires go where. As far as I remember I only undone one bolt and all the wires were attached to that, on the solenoid?

Is that wrong then as i cant get the starter going

For the starter you need the power wires into the top of the solenoid, but you need a trigger wire elsewhere, possibly a lucar rather than ring.
