My 2009 Panda 1.2 Dynamic Eco is running fine, but there is a clearly audible hissing sound coming from around the intake manifold, perhaps indicating a vacuum leak. The brake servo pipe seems fine.

Any pointers on where to look first, and where such issues might typically arise on the pre-VVT 1.2 engine?

If careful you could try some brake cleaner spray in general area, revs will increase when it sucks in the brake cleaner to locate the leak.
Just remember it is highly inflammable.;)

Is there definitely a problem

There is a normal hiss sound from the air rushing past the butterfly at idle, there's no idle control valve on these, so the throttle opening is very smalll
Good point

Remove the air filter and put your thump over the breather pipe. There should be no significant gas movement. A split in the rubber pipe will not cause any noise. Puffs of brake cleaner around inlet manifold will prove if you have an air leak.
