Hello Everyone.

I recently purchased a second hand 500 X cross plus. Love the car! Just wondering if anyone has an idea on this - I lifted up the drivers mat to find a rectangular hole, putting fingers inside it’s mostly insulation foam and what feels like a bundle of wires.

I thought it must be missing a cap or kind of some sort. I checked online and it looks that the part number was a lid. From the schematics of the part you could not tell that it didn’t - itself - have a lid and is more a frame.

Anyhow, does anyone have (or could take) a picture of what they have and should be there? I am now wondering if it should just be the felt type lid / cap / cover. Curious as the hole doesn’t really seem to have anything in it for access etc.

UK spec, right hand drive.

Thanks!

Looking at my car the only thing that looks like your photo is a plastic hinged cover that when lifted reveals the chassis number.
Did you buy your car from a known source because if it what I have said is correct somebody has interfered with it and tried to erase the number.

Hi, thanks for the response - the car was from a garage.

On closer inspection the chassis number can be partly seen but there is a clear film over the top and I can’t tell if that has been damaged / effected by heat or a chemical reaction from paint or another product, gently scratching - it seems like probably, black paint.

Seems odd! The cover is / was missing and the number is obscured.

The log book has four service stamps and the car is just under four years old. The garage is an AA affiliated one and the car has been subject to finance etc. checks.

Wondering what has gone on!

I used to get brand new cars in when I worked for Fiat where these were broken off.

They are really fragile, I wouldn’t worry
Thanks Simon, what should it look like? Presume completely covered? The part I could get hold of is just frame.

The number is obscured by - I think - paint - is that usual? Seems odd but I don’t know.

It came from an AA approved garage and passed checks but wondering if I should get my own report but seemingly all car report sites get terrible reviews.

Thanks!

From memory it’s got like a wee hinged bit on it which pivots.
It’s a black plastic rectangle if that makes sense that covers up the hole you have.

If you look in the hole, the chassis number should be stamped. Again sometimes on brand new cars, there was clear plastic covering it, bits of carpet overlapping etc.

The chassis number is in the bottom left corner of the windscreen too so check this matches

Thanks Simon, it does look like a clear plastic cover over the stamped number - the clear plastic seemingly has paint or something on it. In the morning I will see if I can take the plastic cover / sticker off and verify the number against the windscreen - thanks for your advice!

Who knew taking the bins out could be so productive - was about to recycle the bag the frame came in - then noticed the pivot lid in the bag - hurrah - now in place, I see what you mean about the flimsy fit of the frame and lid though - it only has a lip on one side so it’s not a very snug fit.

Chassis number on windscreen matches the V5 Vin and the numbers I can see in the hole match. So that all adds up - just odd the black paint or what have you - over the clear sticker on the number in the hole.

I have had a couple of bits to replace, 12 volt dash cover was missing, left parcel shelf clip thing was missing and a popper / stud on the boot carpet on the right - just screw sticking out - found a post about that on here and it seems they come off easily - got a close enough match to one online and sorted that and the parcel shelf - and now sorted the hole in the floor!
