They are supposed to have been developing it since the TA was on the drawing board, and this engine is going to be fitted in larger cars too, like the 500L. But I agree that Fiat development has been put on the back burner recently, or so it appears.

They appear to plan releasing pure electric cars now, but not hybrids. Makes sense from easy engineering standpoint, but I am not expecting them to become hits market-wise.
Up to now every "mainstream" successful electric car had range-extending combustion engine (what makes total sense since chemical energy gives vastly superior energy storage comparing to best for of battery technology, and fast re-fuel).
