My LCD has gone blank. I can get the LCD replaced from Akspeedo (has anyone tried them before) or get a full replacement speedo. The car is a 2010 lounge 1.2 pre stop start.

A secondhand speedo is nearly half the price of a replacement LCD screen.

Will the replacement speedo just read the mileage from the car's ecu or does it need to be re-programmed, in which case it maybe easier just to get a replacement LCD - any advice please

thanks

If you buy a secondhand replacement speedo, it will need to be re-programmed. MES can do this reprogramming, but only if the mileage recorded on the replacement speedo is lower than that on the current one. You can adjust the mileage up, but not down. Until it's been reprogrammed to the car, the mileage will flash continuously.

If you just send the existing speedo away to have the LCD screen replaced, it should be plug & play.

Also a used speedo is still an unknown quantity! as these forums show theres a fair chance that you will at some point experience the " flashing dim warning light problem" If your unit is good then the replacement might not be!?.

To be honest id be inclined to send your own unit away to have the screen replaced!- if your not up to doing the work yourself?.
However i would also make sure that whoever you get to do the screen replacement is also capable of doing the modifications to prevent /cure the dim warning light issue, and even if they are alright on your unit BEFORE you send it away make it clear to the repairer you want the repair mods done at the same time as the screen replacement to future proof the whole unit!( and get a invoice/receipt for ALL the work as most are guaranteed once done!

The problem is that the repair involves replacing the LCD and the repair places need to be able to source the LCD, same as you or I. The LCDs appear to be in hot demand but continually out of stock.. I'd have thought some entrepreneur would be making a killing...

Having said that, I would always go with a repair rather than a replacement speedo'. The replacement speedo' I bought for my Stilo lasted 3 weeks before it also failed.. Luckily (?) I had bought it because my original speedo' got lost in the Dutch postal system on the way to be repaired and I had only fitted the new one, to drive around pending the MES re-alignment and mileage adjustment... so when it failed I got all those done at the same time.
