I bought a 2007 Fiat Scudo 1.6 Multijet 90 today and within 5 miles of buying it I had to call the AA out at 8:30am.

The van had gone into limp mode and had and the anti pollution faulty sign come up on the dash and engine management light came on.

I was 85 miles from home and had my 5yr old son and my Fiancee with me so it wasn't a good start tp the day at all.

Anyway the AA man came and the van had 7 codes stored when scanned and he said it needs an egr valve and new fuel filter and a good service.
I managed to crawl the van home from Darlington to Huddersfield, low revs going no more than 55mph in 5th!!

I have two questions I hope you can help with.

Firstly, I have got a fuel filter today from EuroCarParts and when I have come to change it the original has two electrical connector plugs on the back of it but there isn't anywhere to plug these in on the new fuel filter.
Confusing!

What is it these plugs do and are they needed or can I use the fuel filter I have its the first fuel filter I've come across with electrical connectors plugged into it.

Secondly is the EGR Valve at the back of the engine on the bottom right hand side?
Does this need to be accessed from under the van for removal?
Can these be cleaned and reused or is it a case of because of its difficut location its better to fit a replacement EGR?

Any help and advice would be appreciated and hopefully make a very stressful day a little better and give me the knowledge to fix this very poorly van.

normally the sensor is for moisture ( water) in the diesel fuel,
can be used without ( assuming it doesn't cause a sealing issue..!!)

maybe worth giving the van a good long run to get the EGR HOT, should selfclean to a degree,
MANY threads on here regarding EGR valves..!! use SEARCH in "advanced",

Thanks for your response Charlie.
I will fit the fuel filter tomorrow now I know the plugs aren't an issue.
I will have a look at getting the EGR off too so i can clean it or so I can order a new one.

I have replaced the fuel filter and fitted all the bits off the old filter that needed to be transferred over.
All electrical plugs are now used.
The van wont start now and I've rescanned the fault codes and have p0087 and p0093 both of which i had before when the AA scanned the van and deleted the old codes.
These 2 codes have returned so this is obviously the issue the van has.
p0087 = Fuel Pressure Low
p0093 Fuel leak

I have checked the new fuel filter over and there is no fuel leak from me removing and refitting fuel filter.

Anyone any ideas?

I tried to jump it off the other van I have use of but still no joy.
I removed the fuel filter again to make sure everything was ok and it is as if no fuel is getting to the filter as there was hardly any fuel in it. :shrug:
 
Is the battery light on the dash meant to flash when the ignition is turned on?
 
Bit late now but you should have filled the new filter with diesel first because they don't self-bleed hence the fuel pressure codes. Try to get it going on easy start but don't go mental with it, I've seen these hydraulic and crack a liner due to too much sniff!
 
I can fill the fuel filter with fuel that wont be a problem. If I did this with a fully charged battery will I have a better chance of the van starting?
 
Got the engine started (filled fuel filter with fresh diesel) and there is no longer a flashing battery light. No longer an engine management light on but the van won't rev above 2.5k rpm.
I haven't refitted the air filter housing yet as I am collecting a new air filter tonight and fitting it.
 
Thanks varesecrazy, I think I am getting there.
Having a code reader is definitely helping.
Scanned the van and its got two new codes P0401 (EGR Insufficient flow) and code P1351 (Pre Heat Relay).
Do you think its worth using a can of EGR cleaner into the intake before shelling out on a new EGR Valve?
 
Having the codes is one thing, knowing what they mean is another. You can discount the one for the pre-heat, that just means one of the glowplugs is down. I wouldn't get too jumpy about the EGR one either, excess flow might cause your problem but insufficient probably not. Try to blank it off with a bit of metal sheet to eliminate it. I seem to remember one of the Scudo engines had a vacuum operated on the intake system which can fail and restrict the airflow, see if it has one and if so just cable tie it open.
 
Maggers how would I find this vacuum on the intake? Would a vacuum stop the van revving past 2.5k?
Any idea what it looks like?
 
Well, yes it can because the flap restricts the intake pipe when it is closed- it's supposed to stop the engine running on when you switch off. If it's the one I think it is it's a thingy on the intake pipe on the front of engine with a lever on the side going to a vacuum pod, the lever comes off and the flap shuts so cable tie it open.
