Ah, that's not the engine I was thinking of. Try running it with the EGR disconnected. I know this will set a bunch of fault codes but I had the same engine in a Fiesta that wouldn't start because the valve was giving the ECU the wrong signal but ran fine with it disconnected.

I will try it without the EGR plugged in and get back
On here and let you know if it's made a difference.
It starts great now first time just won't rev past 2.5 k

EGR valve disconnected and no change in the engine tone or responsiveness. still wont rev above 2.5k. Fault code 2143 EGR vent circuit open, came up once I'd unplugged the EGR valve and P0401 EGR insufficient flow is a previous EGR one. Do you think its the EGR?

It's a possibility but there's only one way to find out, I've changed one today on the same engine in a Citroen C5 and they're a bit of a monkey to do. On a different tack and going back to me saying "it's nothing to do with the glowpugs" try this one. I had a Focus 1.8 today with a similar problem, stuck in limp mode and fault code for glowplug control, and it was a duff set of glowplugs. It has something to do with emissions - modern diesels don't really need them for starting - the ECU saw they weren't working and put it into limp mode. Different engine - a Ford one as opposed to your PSA one - but may be the same principle. Only prob is, your glowplugs are a PITA to change and often snap off!

Thanks for the maggers.
I've got a new EGR on order as well as a new airfilter and pollen filter as they are black. This can just hasn't been looked after engine wise at all. I will look into getting some glow plugs anyway just to make sure everything is ok engine wise. If I spray them over the course of the week with WD40 would that improve the chances of getting them out.

It may, as would warming the engine up but a lot of times it's just pot luck. Just try and be gentle with them - they'll either come out or snap like carrots! Good Luck!! I know what you mean about being not looked after but even dealer serviced ones can be suspect. I serviced a 1998 Audi last year, full dealer history, and when I changed the fuel filter it was date stamped 1998! Also when I was a Ford Master Tech the kid in the next bay had more Focus pollen filters under his bench than they kept in the parts dept!

WD40 is for Dispersing WATER,

you want a product like "plus-gas" to actually soak down the threads.., ;)

Well it's been a nightmare.
Someone had rounded one of the EGR valve bolts off and I've spent 5hrs getting the EGR off! In the end I had to drill it out.
Will fit the new one tomorrow and hope it all goes to plan and I have a fully working van.
Fingers crossed.

Getting the gasket to stay in place is a pain. The method I use is to strip the insulation off about 3" of wire then cut a couple of strands off and use them to wire the gasket to the valve. The wires' that thin it crushes up and can stay there.

Its fixed! :)
EGR was a real problem access wise and in future it will be going to a mechanic. Only thing I need to do is get a new clip which connects the EGR valve to the rest of the EGR bits (the cylinder shaped object).
Its a strange clip like what you get on a driveshaft gaitor and it wasn't going to go back on so I will buy a new one.
Strange thing with this van is it revs to 2.5k in neutral and no higher and will rev up to 4k plus when driving. Is this a safety device?

Yeah, The revs thing is how they are. Glad you got it sorted, the clip needs some special pliers - which I have but that doesn't help you - or you can get away with some pincers.

I tried with pincers. I have some of those pliers on order as they will be useful if a cv boot ever looses a clip too.
Bought a new revised clip with a screw bolt to fasten it together expensive for what it is but makes the job easier.
Some new front brake discs and pads also on their way along with genuine centre caps.
Full machine polish this weekend and it should resemble a van I own.

A van being polished? Well done my man, most of the ones I work on never see a bucket of water in their life!

Haha I discovered DetailingWorld years ago and never looked back. I currently have a 58 plate silver Astra sporthatch 1.9 CDTI which looked like it's just come out of the showroom it's that clean. I have two cars for sale too a 53 plate MG Ztt 1.8 in Lemans Green which is a minter for the year and a 2002 Saxo Vtr which I've had since new and is in exceptional condition for the year.
It's a hobby of mine keeping my cars as clean as possible and the Scudo will be getting sign written by myself but before that the paintwork needs to be up to my standard. :)

My lads' just bought an '02 ZR in Lemans green to replace his 100HP. His mum is livid but since I spent nearly 20 years as an MG/Rover Tech. i'm staying out of it coz I love them!

I love mine too.
Well I did after fully rebuilding the engine after the dealer I bought it from removed the thermostat to mask a head gasket failure.
New crank shells, new piston rings, Payen MLS gasket, rebuilt and skimmed head, brand new rad, new coolant hoses, water pump and timing belt later and me working consecutive weekends on it for a month and the thing purs and has done for 3 yrs.
Add to that pre cat and underfloor cat and a full exhaust system and new brakes amongst other things and it drives like new.
The thing is a luxury cruiser and should be worth more than it is. I will be listing it for £895 with full MOT and its a bargain for that kind of money.
Be sad to see it go!

ZR's are an underated car. Lemans Green is a lovely colour.

He's just paid £400 for this one. Granted, it's only a 105 and it needs a bit of work but it's been looked after by the garage I work at for the last 6 years. I did the head gasket, cam belt & water pump a couple of years ago so that's out of the way & it drives fine.
