Wikipedia lists two Sofim 2.5 litre engines for that period. The 8144.61, and the 8144.07, which had indirect and direct injection respectively. Outputs were identical.
It would be intersting to know which was fitted, and whether it used either a flame starter, or glowplugs?

the 2.8 idTd is of unknown origin, I dont know what van it cane out of only that it was a fiat ducato. I'm fitting it to a 1992 ducato that originally has a 2.5 none turbo diesel, I do not think there is any type of lift pump, but I am considering fitting one when I swap the engine over.
On the Chassis/Vin plate it should have the Engine Series number which will tell us what the original version of engine was hopefully.
Possibly 8140.07 if non turbo Direct injection and maybe 8144.67 if non turbo indirect injection. The 8140.27 was turbo and Direct Injection, these were all 2.5s around that era and used in Ducato's, wikipedia can give a guide on the versions used once you find the original Engine Series number on the Vin plate. It will also give you an idea of the spec. of the doner engine if you can find the series number somewhere.:)
I believe early 2.5s had the mechanical lift pump which can be seen on various 2.5 Sofim Engines online, I stand to be corrected but suspect the later 2.8itd relied on a electric lift pump in the fuel tank on Ducato's, I know Iveco Daily's with the 2.8 Sofim engine had an electric lift pump on the chassis rail.
Depending on what gearbox and clutch used there is also the issue of whether it a is a "pull off type clutch" which can be a pain when separating engine from gearbox on those front wheel drive vehicles. I had that pleasure on a 05 Citroen Relay with the Sofim 2.8 turbo DI engine. Never a problem with my Iveco Daily RWDs even though they used the same clutch design the release mechanism was more thought out.;)
