Hi guys,

Does anyone know where to look (on the forum) for major oil leak at the rear main crank seal oil leak on the 4x4 trekking,
Or if someone don’t mind repeating info
I need to pull gearbox to replace rear main crank seal and sommer same time do clutch as I have a MAJOR oil leak, also tried to see if someone else had the same issue of finding oil leaks

What I’ve done so far
Oil cap( rubber one)
Tappid cover gasket
Seal behind the coil packs / brackets
Seal at oil pump side
Sump siliconed
So all the easy to reach ones.

Regards

Have you checked the gearbox oil

It very common for the input shaft to leak

There's an inspection hole at the top of the bell housing

Both main crank and input are fairly easy, only know of one diesel with a major leak from the crank bearing

Both require the gearbox off though

Engine oil should be fairly obvious if it dripping on the drive

Sump
Valve cover are the normal places

But really it's a matter of getting some cleaner and seeing where it first reappears

Still check the gearbox if it's low it causes more damage

I have a leak developing on the sump (few thousand km after oil pick-up replacement). Mechanic says it is not the oil sump silicone that is leaking but rather the crankshaft seal on the gearbox side (picture attached).

I was wondering if there is way to make sure it's the crank seal and not the sump without removing the gearbox? Maybe removing the bellhousing cover on the bottom and look with a mirror ?

The plate does come off, but it's easier to use the inspection hole

Endoscope would help

But if you touch the inside with you fingers and is dry it's unlikely to the input or crank seals

Looks like it's leaking high up to me
