General 100HP in Autocar group test

General 100HP in Autocar group test

I couldn't say or comment on what the handling of a Ka is like, or Fords in general, having never driven one. But I'd choose almost any car over a Ka out of pure principle that I don't want to be seen in one!

When my little sister left university and looked for cars she investigated various options. In the end she found a brand new Ford Ka 1.3 from a dealer for £4.5k. People can say what you will about them but they are a lot of runabout for the money and quite entertaining to drive in their own way. No rust yet, but we'll see how it fairs with another winter!

I don't know about the SportKa but I would say it's a different market to the Panda 100hp. I suppose, as said above, that it's partly poor pricing policy from Fiat and possibly the press' over-estimation of them. I suppose in a reverse logic way it could be seen as a compliment even if they are then thought to underperform?.......

I think they are the same market tbh.

Both £10k list yet can be had for sub £8k new, both 10sec 0-60 both around 100hp in one tonne cars - kinda sporty versions of shopping cars!!

My main concern with the 100hp is at least the original KA chassis is great fun the standard Panda is designed for people who dont like driving IMHO.

I still think the KA looks better but the Panda is technically the better car in terms of fuel and equipment (Although KA has leather and heated front screen).

Great to hear everyones opinions though!!

Surely the same could be said about the lacklustre engines in the KA :p

I know everyone on here isnt exactly impartial... but does everyone really think the Panda looks better???

The Panda looks great apart from exactly side on IMHO, but thats probably just me due to van jibes!!!

I honestly think that the Ka is a strong contender, but I wouldn't consider it seriously because the design etc is mid 90s. Other problem is partner wouldn't entertain the thought of it at all. He seems to have a ford aversion.

But it doesn't look bad in the pics i'll give you that.#

Also I know its a tad snobby, but I don't think I could bring myself to buy a car with an 8v engine. Its a bit low tech really. Plus I haven't owned a car with 8 valves since 1995!

Can you get a Sportka for less than £8k? I don't know but a quick list on Autotrader gives a new Panda in at £7.5k and a new Sportka in at £8.5k, and £1000 buys a reasonable amount motoring ! :)

But no-one seems to mention you can buy the panda and run it for a couple of years for the same cost as just buying teh twingo and swift!!

Sam

I'd suggest you look at this https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-new/165210-100hp-px.html
yes the car is high mileage. But it has pretty halved in value in 5 months....initial purchase price is not the only factor you don't pay as much for a panda but you don't get as much back. Even the renault should have stronger residuals.... and well as for comparison to swift residuals this is a two year old 1.5 glx with 82000miles on it going for £4700, and if with a mileage like that on a car like that its safe to assume its an ex driving school car. http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...el=SWIFT&min_pr=4000&max_pr=5000&max_mileage=
Its not just what you pay its what its worth after.

Although you're comparing px price to private sale price in that example, as well as an actual price vs an advertised price?

Chris

Well lets say they take it in for a grand less than they sell it for....that would be 3700...that 800 less than the 100hp owned by arsedownoz....yet the car is 1.5 years older, has 60k more on it and is out of manufacturers warranty because it only lasts for 60k thats still a decent amount of money for something that high mileage.

I read I think in EVO mag recently, that the latest Corvette with its 2valve per cylinder engine (its a V8 so only 16V's), makes more torque lower down and across a wider rev range, makes more headline power, and gives better MPG than any equivalent performance car in its league, including Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Audi etc, its also faster round Nurburgring than the new Nissan GTR with all its whistles and bangs and computer trickery and super sticky non road tyres & tweeked engine that it used which has emerged recently after Porsche bought one as they couldn't believe that with the power to weight ratio the GTR could ever be that quick, and using a there test drivers couldn't get anywhere near what its supposed to do, they even invited Nissan back to quantify the time in the Porsche owned car, they declined :D

So don't dismiss good old 8V's yet.

Bit off track I know, but hey..............:p

Is it Launch or Lunch control ?

It only creates loads of power though because it has a massive engine. Give me a BMW M3 with an 8500redline anyday over some merkin crap. Sorry am not a fan of many things that originate from merkinia, particularly so when it comes to cars.

I'd still never own an 8v and no way on earth i'd own an merkin 8v with the same redline as a dismal. (n)

£4.5k is a VERY good price. My parents paid over £5k for one at a car supermarket a while back, and that was the lowest spec.

I wouldn't buy a new car if I was planning to sell it soon. I'm hoping to keep my next car for 10+ years, and it's value will be almost meaningless.

Yes but a lot of people buy a new car keep it for 3 years and lose alot of cash, I tend to keep cars 2-3 years after which i'm usually bored. However I don't buy new so lose less.

got to love the v8's a proper engine, but if i was going to have one would make shur it was a 32valve supercharged (y)

ithink the ka looks quite good compared to a standard one but genraly think fords are pretty dam boring except for the old skool cozies, but as ya say out dated engine standard ford stuff a 1.6 single cam 8v with 95bhp wow (n)

I wouldn't say Fords are particularly boring - Fiesta Zetec-S's are meant to be entertaining, Fiesta ST's got good reviews and are capable in the right hands (and easilly tunable) and Focus ST's get excellent reviews and are VERY tuneable, except a little thirsty. The trouble with Fords, IMO, is nothing to do with the product but a lot to do with the image.

On the way home today I saw a new Punto being attended by an AA van. I wonder how many people thats consolidated a Fiat image for!

I do agree that anything Cosworth is the best....but then I'm biased. :D
