Hello,

I am trying to find out the location of the core plugs on my Fiat Punto.

It's a 1.2 16V engine it has the code 188A500

Can someone help me with this? Some photos would help me to.

I was just wondering about the location to check on them.

As I am going to replace the timing belt I am wondering why the cautionary warning about not messing with them?
Are there any downsides about not changing them preemptively?
 
Having had leaking core plugs on my last punto, I can say, leave them ALONE!!. I filled mine with liquid metal to stop the leaks, but it was very messy and I would not advocate it!!

On the first photo, you can see one plug between the water rail (black pipe behind exhaust) and the green note line. - theres three in a line behind the exhaust - four at the back of h engine in a similar position and nearly impossible to get to.

If the ones at the font behind the cat don't have a rusty, water coloured mark on them, leave them well be.
 
Hi Crankshaft. Core plugs are to my past knowledge fitted dry under a lot of pressure and are made to very tight tolerances.The block is also machined to very tight tolerances for the plug to fit. As stated in the other answers, they are impossible to get at without a complete engine dismantle. I have only ever seen one blow out and that was on a mini in the 1960's.Any way they are also nearly impossible to remove. So as I said earlier IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T TOUCH IT.
 
I replaced core plugs on a X1.9 when I was doing the engine, one was very rusty so did them all, block needs to be spotless, small bit of sealer and core plugs in deep freeze, they will go in handy enough then.

So there are a total of 7 plugs? I was thinking there would be more.

I was told by another punto owner that some big plugs usually gain rust, since they are in a part where water circulates. Especially if people fill the cooling system with just water.

I am not a mechanic, I am just a Punto owner :p If there was a problem with the plugs in my engine, and someone was to change them, for sure it wouldn't be me.
I just like to learn about this kind of things.

There is at least one more behind the bell housing between gearbox and engine for me to know of. From doing (or more correctly, bodging) mine, they are not really a serviceable part without a massive expense as the engine ideally has to come out for them to be pressed in. There may be ways of doing it in situ, but it wouldn't be easy!
