having had a few faults on 1.6 dynamic the latest ones are fuel level sensor fault and despite having replaced the coolant sensor i have got high coolant temperature warning on display any ideas?used codereader to turn out engine lamp but fuel level sensor fault comes back and have had enough of fiat charging £70 to tell you either nothing or the wrong thing i thought i would try here.

Fuel level sensor warning is one of those things that people tend to get when they have very low fuel in the tank and it's saying the sensor is producing out of acceptable limits readings. It seems to be nothing to worry about and usually disappears when you cease driving around on the dregs of the tank

For the engine temp sensor, I put an easy "How to check your rad fan amd engine temp sensor" in the Stilo Guides -click on "Guides" up above. Obviously first make sure that your engine isn't actually overtemping. Is the dash gauge going up into the red too? Is your engine fan working when it should?
For the dash gauge and high engine temp warning to trigger, the engine temp sensor resistance needs to go low- Below 176 ohms so if it's a misguided warning then you're looking for something causing that but make sure your engine isn't overtemping first. The warnings are never wrong, there's always a reason for it

Hi I'm having the following fault:

Usually when the fuek in the tank reaches the reserve limit I'm having a fuel engine fault. After restart the car everything starts working fine. I've noticed this error happening when the fuel in the tank is in about reserv limit.

The coolant temperature sensor is lokated in the termostat. Recently I've bought the whole termostat and it comes with the temperature sensor. The reasons of non working of this sensors might be:

  1. Not correctky working termostat (not fully opens) causing the car to overheat.
  2. Not correctly working colling engine fan (2 working levels)
  3. Air in the colling system (I doubt but it may be )
  4. Not working temp gauge on the dash board (could be checked with examiner)

no the temp problem this morning came on the moment the engine started after being stood for the last two days so it is most definitley not overheating the fuel level sensor problem also had nothing to do with the amount of fuel in the vehicle as it was reading half full and i have since covered another 50 miles and the guage has not dropped dramatically so the problems looklike poss ecu fault would you say.

So as soon as you start the engine from cold you get an immediate "High coolant temperature - stop engine" warning and engine temp gauge in the red? I'd check the resistance across the disconnected eng temp sensor and expect it to be around 20k with the engine cold then you can dismiss that side of things

Do you get any other warnings at start up like ABS?

Did it suddenly start doing this? Had any work done on the car recently?

The more information you can give the better the diagnosis

yeh as soon as you start the car warm or cold this happens not had the car very long but full fiat history the only other warning was fuel level sensor which is what was picked up by diagnostic had the car into fiat two weeks ago told me there were no faults but the "master" technician diagnosed air temp sensor fault so i ordered on had it fitted turns out it is integral with map sensor and also changed coolant sensor but warning persists strange one i know.help

Wow that's a lot of sensor faults. Not going to be easy but let's se what you've got. We know the engine isn't over temp but the ECU thinks that it is.
As many of the sensor faults relate to the ECU then I'd check the ECU earth is good. Trace the main earth connecion from the ECU to the engine earth and check it out

Disconnect and use contact cleaner on the ECU connectors.

I'd check resistance across a disconnected eng temp sensor for being around 2k ohms for a cold engine, around 170 ohms for hot one, 160 ohms is overheat sensing and warning

I'd check the voltage at the engine temp sensor with ign on but engine not started. Should be around 5v on cold engine going down to around 1v when engine is hot.

I'd do the procedure described in the Stilo Guides for checking the operation of the engine temp sensor in simulating a cold engine and check out the dash gauge corresponds with expected readings

fiat stilo fuel sensor fault

Hi friends at the forum...i need some help with my fuel gauge it dosn't move from the empty posistion..i have tried everythink but not the dealers ...i have taken out the fuel pump and the fuel sender unit and done a circuit test to see if there is any resistance so far it seems to be working, i have also checked the power supply to the fuel sender and its fine ...does anybody know why my fuel gauge dose'nt work ...,,p.s the tank is full all the time as i car'nt afford to run out..(y)

I had avery similar fault, the gauge showed empty all of the time,It was the earth i ran a long wire from the tank to the battery earth and hey presto the gauge worked normal all i had to do then was clean the earth point up. hope this is of help

Re: fiat stilo fuel sensor fault

This may be a false lead, but I once owned a strada (ritmo) which showed a fuel guage fault only a few weeks from delivery. Fiat uk in London service dept were unable to fix it, having replace two floats and two sensor connections, until one of the mechanics had the idea to take the tank off the car. That helped identify a loose baffle in the tank which had been fouling the float. I dont know if the stilo tank has baffles - I presume it has, but maybe worth checking if all else fails.
