I have had my brake warning light come on at random intervals, so i checked my brake fluid and its below min, when i take the cap off and look there is some fluid in there, is there a filter in there that could be full of gunk or something and stopping fluid from going into the tank?

if the warning light is coming on intermittantly - i.e. only when you accelerate, or only when you brake, then it could be caused by the little brake fluid you have sloshing around in the reservoir. And as I've just found out to my cost (assuming you've got anything other than a Mk1 Punto 55) a common cause of brake(hydraulic) fluid loss is the clutch slave cylinder, which is fed from the same reservoir. Best to check it out quickly!

problem is, i can't. all the fluid is staying in the bit you pore into, its not going into the tank. with the attempted diagram below, the # is the fluid.

I've just been saved by the Fiat Forum once again. Just had this exact problem with my mk2b HGT and couldn't work out how the brake fluid I was pouring in was floating above the tank.
You can't see the filter but it is there. A tiny membrane. Once cleaned, it will let the fluid through.

Nice one Dave.

wow! old thread

Its not uncommon for the filter to hold fluid

And When hammered into corners it sloshs flashing the light....

If you've never had the brake fluid changed, then time for a Nice Refill :)

Dont complain a New member (by the way of his post count) who has found the search and solved his problem is a rare event :slayer:

Dead right. :) All too many expect the exact answer on a plate with a bow on top.

Ziggy is right change that brake fluid NOW.

Fertle the filter out with a fine screwdriver under its top edge (look carefullt you will see the filter edge.

Fill the fluid reservoir with new fluid then with a friend bleed the old crap out of the brakes.

Put a clear plastic tube on bleed nipple into a suitable bottle. Open nipple, push down pedal, close nipple, raise pedal, repeat. Keep topping up reservoir until fluid flows clean. Repeat on all four brakes.

Old fluid absorbs water which boils when it gets hot and the brakes stop working. It also rots the brake callipers. New fluid clean all that out.

NO NO NO NO

for a fluid top up - A small bottle of DOT 4 from halfords will do you nicely :)
Or any auto-factors

IF it was a full system refresh £20 is okay :)

have question because maybe havse same problem

i was check the level of break fluid and is low somewhere around minimum
the car start have problem as overheating and message note that i have turn off the engine..specialy when the car was stay{it's my partner car} it's happen twice so far she tell me that always when she stay and have Ac on radio as well...after she stop she was able to start the car and drive again with no probl...

can the low level cause this???
if yes if i buy some break fluid can i put this fluid onto the plastic reservoir and mix the old one with new one...thx
Rene

No. Low brake fluid level will not cause the car to overheat. First you need to get a small bottle of DOT4 brake fluid and top up the reservoir. Mixing old and new is ok. If the old fluid is much darker than the new it would be wise the have the fluid replaced entirely with new.
Overheating can be caused by many things. First check the coolant level in the radiator when the car is cold. If the level is ok you need to get it checked out before it becomes a large repair bill. If the level is low you need to start looking for leakd and find out where it is going.

hi as brendan says but a litte story for you
Lady came in friday lunch with a punto she bought about 6 months ago, said she had been on a long journey and temp had gone above halfway,i asked questions like if oil and water were ok? she said yes
Then i asked if fan under bonnet had been heard she said yes,i was busy at the time so told her to leave car and i would check it out before tea time that night with a prognosis as she told me it must be headgasket and without checking i possibly agreed.
1 minute later she came back and asked when it would be ready, i said wednesday at the earliest as im very busy, remember, i had said i would check it out the same day and i dont rob people.
She decided she couldnt wait till wednesday or teatime and went off in her car:eek:

i then worked out in hindsight it must have been a stuck thermostat that needed sorting straight away something i could have done in 1/2 an hour tops.

now her head gasket WILL have gone

and the moral of the story?
do as you have done besip ask questions get free answers and sort it out as you will

i wil check this out btw...Fiat dealer say that we have to use only their recomendet engine fluid{some kind of selenia} which i dont beleive.

but can we also mix all engine fluid with new one if the level is low????

is gonna be hard to see the level anyway the pipe is like dirty and on bed spa
