Hi

I know this must be covered numerous times but a search doesn't seem to bring up much.

I have a 1997 Ducato 2.5TD based Motorhome. I know about the common 5th gear failure and wish to check the gear box oil level.

There isn't a dip stick on the box so its an empty and replace job.

Various forums state different amount of oil and type so looking for a definitive answer.

Most people go for over filling to 1.9 L of oil, with 2 different types of oil:

75W/80 GL5 - or - EP80W90, Semi-synthetic.

Anyone advise on the best option and amount?

Thanks, Steve

I have posed the same question for a 2001 2.8, nobody seems to want to commit themselves to a definitive answer. One smart ass even advised me to check the book, which I had already done and commented on in my first post, if they had bothered to read it. This is what I am doing anyway, I got 3 litres of semi synthetic 75/90 API GL5 and I will put in 2.7 Lts. That's my decision anyway!

There should be a dipstick on the 2.5 boxes for that model - front and center. Its a smaller casing than the later mglu I don't think it would take 2.7l. They changed the gears and syncros and oil on 1996 according to fiat eper I would check when yours was manufactured as a gl5 oil might damage it or you could opt for a gl4+ oil which is gl4 with safe ep additives.

My 1998 2.5td Ducato had a level plug to fill up to, from memory it was located on the flat vertical part of the casting facing the engine.

I got a little extra oil in by tilting the van.

The pre 1995 boxes had dipsticks.
