The term 'work in progress' has no more apt application than when dealing wth competition cars.

MOT day today, and going across he Erskine Bridge this morning, I heard it.

Nice sweeping right hand bend to join the road to the MOT station and

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

That sounds like a wheel bearing, nice.

So, failed on both rear wheel bearings, one far worse than the other, the downside of handbrake turns I'm afraid. Only other thing was a loose fuel union, so not too bad in all. One bearing in stock, the other coming tomorrow, fixed tomorrow night, retest Wednesday.

Both rear hubs fitted, including transferring the studs, and fuel pipes all tightened, less than an hour, not bad for an old bloke.

Thought I'd check the gearbox, don't know why, but glad I did. There seems to have been some water in there.

If you think headgasket mayonaise is bad, you should see gearbag oil mayonaisse. Slimy!!

Flushed out with fresh, will need done again after a run. Will need to keep an eye on it.

I hope the water got in naturally rather then deliberate vandalism, I don't have a reverse detent cable in and the covering grommet was missing.

You replace the hub nuts? I removed mine and they didn't appear to be staked, but I guess they should be replaced anyway?

Cheers,

Kristian

Nope, thread locked them.

As an aside, I went to where I used to work to borrow a lift. I asked one of the techs if he had any threadlock.

Half deaf workshop controller said that his hair was too short for dreadlocks.

Jings, over three months since I've done anything to the car.

Youngest daughter on half term at the mo, so I took the afternoon off and we fitted the six speed into the car. Sorry Gary!!

Didn't quite finish before the frost attacked, but its in. Just needs the shafts refitted, oiled up, starter motor in, suspension reassembled, bumper and sumpguard refitting.

Event on Saturday.

Any chance of a few piccies of it in its element? :D

Did you have any issues with scrubbing on the box? Think your wheels are smaller than mine, so maybe not. (edit - no suspension or shafts - obv not got to the wheels on yet - silly me)

Cheers,

Kristian

I haven't taken the shafts right off. I have removed the top strut pinch bolt and loosened the lower one. That gives enough movement to slide the shafts out of their cups.

I also had to unbolt the lower strut brace/sumpguard mount to get the box out. It is attached to the front wishbone mounts.

Got it all back together, bar the sumpguard. Thought I'd just start the car up before coming home. Won't start. Turns over fine, just doesn't sound like there is a spark there.

Was getting late, so I shall pop in tomorrow to diagnose and fix.

Didn't check the clearance issue.

It wasn't the gearbox earth. I should have realised as the car was turning over fine. It was the crank sensor. The cable had been compromised by the angle the engine was at, and the sumpguard forward mount.

Changed that, fired up a good un. Adjusted the clutch, and off we went for a drive. All good.

I managed to come up with a reverse attachment that works with an alloy gearknob, so got that fitted and I sorted out the crankcase breather too.

So all ready for Saturday when Liam (formerly of this parish) is making his competition debut in the car too.

Firstly, the non starting thingy raised its head again this morning on the way to the event. I decided to drive the car rather than trailer it to get it all warmed through and get the rust off the brakes.

Was going really well until a tight right hander and it died.

Fiddled about with a few wires and it came back to life, but wasn't right.

Made it to the test site and with Liam's help identified that the injector plug wasn't making contact.

Why this should happen after a clutch change is beyond me, but a quick realignment of the metal sockets inside the plug had it running fine all day.

Secondly

Young people do a search for 'Torrey Canyon'

Thats a bit what the car was like by the end of the day. Can't trace where its coming from so tomorrow's job is application of loads of gunk and try and find the source.

Thirdly

Pictures soon.

Cheers

ps I think Liam enjoyed himself, he certainly got the handbrake turn sorted.
