There seem to be several versions of the Fiat 1.4 16v engine around. Can anyone confirm whether or not the 100 bhp engine as fitted to the 500 has the following features –

  • Port Deactivation (to improve swirl)
  • CVCP (variable cam phasing)
  • Coil on Plug ignition

And why is the ECU on the 500 different to the one on the Panda 100bhp ?

John

iirc you dont have the Port Deactivation (to improve swirl)
CVCP (variable cam phasing) that is on the starjet engine. but you do have the 4 coils one on each plug

that is a good thing because the ports on the Port Deactivation ones are crap, have a look in my gallery for some photos of them

So the 1.4 in the 500 is not a Starjet engine, then. But presumably it is exactly the same as the Panda 100bhp. Where can I find some decent technical specifications for the engine? So far my Internet searches have come up with zilch.

John

I do know that the 16v FIRES are run from one pully. I don't understand why the alter both. Usually only the inlet is varied. They could have done this on the rear.

cos there both attached together i s pose so no choice

i can see were your coming from on the rear thou between one of the gears and the cam shaft would involve quite a big mod on that end thou whereas putting it outside the engine in the cam vernier is much easier

it probably doesn't make any difference weather it turns the exhaust aswell

Hi, I have some small question about the 1.4 :)

Is it the same engine block as used in the T-Jet (120/155hp) from the Grande Punto or the Alfa MiTo (1.4TB 155hp) ?

Is this an alloy or steel block ?

Iam also interested in the gearbox, is it (the 6 Speed) the same as the one from the T-Jet's (120/155hp Grande Punto for example)

The Panda 100hp should have exatctly the same gearbox, but does he also have the same gear ratios/final drive than the 500 ? (I wonder why the Panda is 1sec faster 0-100kph)

Unfortunally its impossible to find such details at fiat.xxx

I drive a 5oo 1.4
It's OK for me , I only wish the throttle response would be better (even in sport-mode its quite ) and a bit more torque would be fine.
The dyno graph should look more like the one from the 1.2 , "lots" of torque downstairs and (almost) max. power from ~4500rpm to the limiter :yum:

I also dont understand why a 4cyl. 1.4 16V is limited to 6500rpm.

Slowly i begin to think about remapping...
or bolting the esseesse kit on the 100hp 1.4

It seems like it has the same bore/stroke as the T-Jet (72x84mm) and also the same 1368cc.

This is really a different engine (crankcase) ?
:chin:

I thoght FIAT got rid of the heavy old scrap :yuck:

no its not the same. and is steel block

Blocks tend to be cast iron or aliminium. Turbo engines will always have lower compression so different pistons normally acheive this.

Surely it must be ally?

In response to stb:

The 1.4 engine isn't limited to 6K rpm, will easily go to 7000rpm.

I'm surprised that the throttle response is lethargic in the 500 as it is pretty sharp in the 100hp. There are obviously some other differences that account for a different feel to the car I guess.

I would expect that the 500 is a tad heavier than the panda which may well account for the 0-60mph difference.

why must it be?

if you want ally block you have to go buy a pug 206

Cast iron is heavy and old technology. Most modern engines tend to be all ally, they warm up quicker, lighter, less emissions. I think you might find that there are other cars with ally blocks... the k-series for example.

So its a cast iron block and ally head. That surprises me a bit tbh.

Not steel!!!!

The 500 is 45kg lighter (Panda 100hp 1050kg , 500 1.4 1005)

In the 500, without remapping ?
On mine the limiter kicks in at ~6500 (not tested it to often yet), redline is at 6000.

I still hope that the 1.4 100hp has the same enigine block as the 1.4 T-Jet's.
(because ist has same bore/stroke and capacity, usually different engines never have exactly the same figures)
The 1.4 T-Jet (120 to 180hp) are alloy engines (block and head).

Finally i found something with more details than the usual press blabla.

klick

Seems to be a "state of the art" full alloy engine.

It does refer to cast iron bearing caps and aluminium crankcase, but nowhere does it talk about the block as such. Confusing as hell article, its jargon-tastic. What we need is a pic of the engine!

Voila!

Definately not all alloy, you can see the cast iron block in the pic.
