Hello!

My first post after a couple of months of lurking.

For a few weeks, my gears ground when changing into reverse. Not every time. People had told me to expect to need a new clutch so I put it down to the clutch wearing out. Sometimes, the clutch pedal didn't bounce all the way up and I would use my foot under the pedal to bring it all the way up.

10 days ago, I drove 20 minutes to the local dump. Reversing into my spot noisily was a bit embarrassing but tolerable...

On the way home, all seemed fine. But a couple of minutes into my drive it became very difficult (without a fight) then impossible to change into first gear, so I was pulling away from traffic lights etc in 2nd gear. Then 2nd also became impossible so I was limited to 3rd and 4th.

Once I got home (I normally reverse parallel park) I had to use a downhill to reverse into my spot.

With the engine turned off, I could move into any gear. Engine running, none.

I was referred to a gear box and clutch specialist. I told him all of the above and he says it was a hydraulics issue. He came over a week's ago with some brake fluid, pumped the clutch pedal all the way down and up 30 times or so and it was possible to change gear with the engine running. Any gear. And the pedal bounced back 100%.

The following morning, I tried it again. No joy.

3 days ago, I topped up the fluid. A few bubbles came up from the reservoir. I repeated the pedal pumping but instead the pedal now has NO resistance and bounces back about a finger's width. When pumping the pedal manually, there's more resistance when raising it than pressing it!

It's a very niche situation but I figured if there's was going to be any niche knowledge anywhere, this would be the place.

Thanks for reading.

Has anyone checked for fluid leaking anywhere under the car !? could be a failed seal in either the slave or master cylinder you did mention bubbles appearing in the reservoir when you topped up which could suggest an air leak somewhere!

What year is car?
The non twin air have a clutch pipe joint made of alloy that corrosion causes to split and leak

This is what the mechanic said. I'm booked in for the work if I can get it there!!!!

That's what I'd say the most likely cause is, too.

The repair will be to replace the clutch hydraulic components; so new clutch master & slave cylinders.

This is quite a common issue on a car of this age.
The mechanic only brought a small coffee cup of fluid
That's all the fluid there is in the system. Even a small leak will quickly drain it.

I'd suggest you don't drive the car until this is fixed. Driving it in this condition risks ruining the gearbox, and then the repair will be expensive.

Thank you! Fortunately I can't get it into gear so no risk of driving my darling car!
