Panda (Classic) Red Classic Panda 4x4 restoration.

Introduction

There's a lot to tell on this introduction, you have been warned.

I had a phone call about three weeks ago from a Guy called Phin who had been given my number by a garage who looks after one of my friend's Panda 4x4. Are you with me so far?

Phin has two Pandas of his own so he arranged to come and see me in case I could be of any assistance to him in the future. Nice Guy, Panda nut, I'm sure we will do business in the future.

Anyway, about a week ago I get an email from Phin telling me that a friend of his is helping a lady clear her house in Oxford and she's had a Panda on the drive that's been there for the last five years. She now wants to get rid of it and I may be able to take it for free if I'm interested, he will send me pics asap.

Stick with it, there will be pictures soon :p.

I replied saying that I had no space and even free it's going to cost me £100 just to collect it. I have a couple of donor cars already so don't really need another anyway.

Then Phin's friend Jeff emails me some pictures, :( :) It's only a 4x4 with twin sunnies isn't it!

It was in a right state, as you'll see in a bit, but underneath all the crud I could see a half decent car. If I didn't rescue it a scrap man was waiting with £100 to take it away so I decided to give the lady a call and sort something out.

Ellan was the Lady and it had been her late husbands car. Any money it raised was going to her two Daughters. Quite rightly her priorities lay with her Daughters and not me so if I wanted to take the car I'd have to match the scrap man's offer. I happily agreed. Now I have to decide what to get rid of to make space for it. :(

Ok, here's some pics. Anyone with a weak disposition look away now.......

Doors are rusty, no surprise there, the rear side window on the o/s has been replaced by perspex after someone smashing the original many years ago. The sills look pretty good though, only at the back where they always go is there any sign of rust. The tyres were flat and perished but did hold air once pumped up. The brakes were stuck on, but after a little rocking freed off and have been fine ever since, even the handbrake! The battery is dead so I have no idea if it runs, but once it is running there will be a thousand spiders loosing thier homes.

It turned out that Ellan's Husband bought it from new and loved it until his sudden death in December 2006. He'd covered 120,000 miles in it including many trips abroad to the Pyrenees and Alps. It was also his every day transport around Oxford where he was an Oxford Don, teaching at the University since 1977. Surprising he should choose a Panda given that he originated from the USA.

Because it is a one owner 4x4 with twin sunnies, the owner (Peter Derow) is an interesting character in his own right and looked after this Panda well, I feel I owe it to him to restore it to as close to the condition he first bought it in as I can manage. I know that Ellan and her Daughters would love to see this happen too. Besides, I'm getting a little bored with leather interiors and alloy wheels. :p
I do... because isn't that sort of your job ;)

Your obviously very lazy since this one has been sitting around for so long and you basically have nothing else going on.... :D

Well you've seen how empty my workshop is, oh, no you haven't, never ever been there before. :p

This one is pretty low on the list of priorities, shame coz I'm really looking forward to restoring it.

You have a workshop?!!
It looked like it was starting to get mossy again (n) Shouldn't it be indoors with all that free space you have.

On second thoughts if you could leave Charmania indoors that'd be great :D

any updates on this VmanC? :D

Yep!

With the Sisley nearly out the door I thought it was time we looked at what we have with this one. This afternoon it was towed into the workshop with a view to making a list of what it needs for mot, and try to get it running.

Well after freeing off the choke linkage and fitting a new battery it started!

Needs a tune up but overall it sounds sweet. The brakes need freeing off next so that it can be driven to assess the gearbox etc.

Not bad after seven + years dormant.

Well the brakes are still a little sticky but ok to have a drive around the yard. The short trip was very encouraging, drove well with no gearbox issues. :)

Some of the ball joint rubbers are split and all the suspension components are pretty rusty, but there is very little wear anywhere. I was expecting this one to have been well maintained, and it was, all the issues are down to poor storage really.

The outer sills are in great condition but there is some evidence of corrosion on the inners, not a massive amount but some at the ends as usual. I don't think the rust repairs will require removal of those lovely outers, I certainly hope not anyway, we will see.

We put the better doors on today as it seemed to be the safest place to keep them. They came from a 2wd of the same colour so I was hoping for a good colour match. The 2wd Panda didn't have side trims so I had to drill holes for the trim clips, It didn't have a door pocket on the passenger side either so I had to fit new inserts for the screws too.

Once I polished up the body a little either side of the doors I could see that the colour match is great, as is the condition of the new doors, if only it could be that cheap and easy every time.

I still need to add the black areas around the windows and will renew the black around the rear side windows too as it's a little tatty, but not a priority at this stage.

Finally a chance to bring this one up to date.

With such a great history, and the fact that it has twin sunnies, I always had in mind that this would be a keeper, but with the arrival of the Mk1 4x4 my plans have sadly changed.

I didn't have to try too hard to find a new owner, looked no further than this Forum in fact, but before anyone could take ownership there was the small matter of getting it road legal.

I've forgotten every detail of what we needed to do but this should cover most if not all of it.......

The o/s sill was not quite as easy to repair as I'd hoped......

Appologies for not having more pics but my head was down at this time and I kept forgetting to take them.

A service and a new ball joint was about all that was needed after the welding to get an mot. :D

Other jobs involved waxoiling etc (but not with waxoil).
The drivers seat was unsupportive. Turned out to be a broken strap under the foam base. There was space to fit an extra strap in addition to replacing the broken one.

The fuel tank was looking rusty, just surface, so I thought I'd clean it up and protect it. It didn't take long before I discovered a few pin holes, I then had a leaking tank :bang:

Fortunately I had a spare.....

There are quite a few stickers in the windows that Peter collected on his European trips. I hope future owners keep them as they are an important part of this cars history......

The Panda has never been to Canada of course, Peter Derow was Canadian.

I had to add a sticker of my own.....

That's pretty much it. I've been running it around a little over the last month and found it to be a really nice driver. The engine and running gear are sweet, if it wasn't for the rev counter you'd think the engine had stalled when pulling up at junctions, it's that smooth and quiet. The tyres are a little unrefined but I believe the owner has plans for the wheels and tyres anyway.

Today was probably my only chance to take him to a car show. It's a very local monthly meet and Pandas tend to go relatively unoticed but it was nice to see him there anyway......

As you can see the front bullbar and spot lights are no more, they were far too rusty to be refitted, I could probably have the bullbar repaired but the cost puts me off for now.

A new owner should be picking him up soon, and I'm sure will continue to keep us all up to date with this lovely Pandas progress.
