Panda (Classic) Fiat Panda 750L - Minor Restoration Project - Work In Progress

Introduction

So here is our 750L Panda - Also know as Victoria.

attachment.php

Now as you all know I like all Panda's and all of ours are special in their own little way, but none more so that this 750L. It was our first ever Panda and started what has so far been a decade of Panda fun. It was also given to me by dad and was my first ever car so has a very special place in my heart, even if a lot of my mates thought it was a shed (n)

She was purchased in September 2000 from a very good family friend who purchased her as an ex-showroom demo from Thames Fiat in South London in 1989. We brought her for a mere £250 with some tax, MOT, and a full Fiat service history, no rust, and only 35,000 on the clock!! A bit of a bargain if you ask me, but at the time the used car market was at its worst and if we hadn't brought her our friend was actually going to scrap her!

So from September 2000 through to the summer of 2006 she was the family's second car, being used as a work horse during house moves out of South London to Norfolk, and then 6 months later for another move from Norfolk to Sunny Suffolk.

During the Summer of 2006 we spotted a Panda 1000CL for sale locally which was the identicle twin of the 750L. So we had to buy it. £80 later, it was apparent that she needed a lot of work for the MOT, but nothings inpossible and we then had a Father and Son 'Pandas R Us' Pair. In July 2006 I passed my driving test, and after a short adventure in Bolivia September came around and with 96,000 miles on the clock, dad handed me the keys and the 750L became mine :)

She gave me a year of trouble free motoring, and other than needing a new battery and centre exhaust section (she's had more exhausts in the past decade than I care to remember, but the majority have always been covered by one warrentee or other) cost me next to nothing to run, and took all the abuse that your average 17 year old lad could throw at her  .

However, after nearly a year of ownership I spotted a bargain Selecta on eBay with 15,500 miles on the clock for a mere £350 with a years MOT. After a few minutes of thinking and then realising that the 1108cc Selecta had 50% more CC's than the 769cc the 750L had I hit the Buy It Now button and purchased it.

So since September 2007 the 750L has sat peacefully on the drive with 113,000 miles on the clock. Gradually she's started to look sorry for herself, and although she starts and moves fine, bodywork is slowly starting to perish, and there are a few odd jobs that need doing on her before she'll fly through another MOT.

These jobs include;
  • Changing Both Headlamp units - both have broken reflector units that don't sit on their mounts, and the reflectors have started to become a little less reflective (see pics).
  • Investigate and change headlamp switch - I can't remember if this one has burnt out or not, but have a funny feeling it has.
  • Change Coolant Pump Seal - The 'O' ring washer that seals the coolant pipe tube to the pump has gone / been ruined when I recently done a coolant flush and change - she now doesn't hold coolant for very long.
  • Replace Rubber Exhaust Brackets - The rear Rubbers have perished and the exhaust is now resting on the rear axel. A nice and easy job.
  • Degrease and clean engine and engine bay - A bit of a mess, and shouldn't take much to tidy it up
  • Mount Alarm Siren correctly - For some reason this was cable tied in place when I fitted the system years ago
  • Investigate and Fix Front Lights Wiring - Indicators seem to be a bit hit and miss and the wiring is a mess after being hacked about 7 years ago when an earth issue arose. So I need to check and tidy this up, I may just replace the whole wiring loom as I have a spare so it'll all look better under the bonnet
  • Investigate Rear Wiper Motor - It runs really slow, I think its the motor, and have another so will see if current one is serviceable, and if not replace it with the spare.
  • Investigate and Fix Temperature Guage - On dash guage has stopped working, was intermittant when I had her, so is probably just a wiring / connection issue, so will check wiring and if needs be change the sensor (y)
  • Fit Rear Wheel Arch Trim's - Old ones were damaged and faded, so for the sake of £10 a side I've brought replacements from Fiat.
So not to much really in the grand scheme of things.

The Lights, Filthy Engine Bay, and Wiring that needs sorting

Another thing that needs doing is her body work though. Underneath she's fairly solid, and most of the shell is, although there are some nasty bits on the windscreen scuttle that I need to get done, and by the O/S rear window. The boot lid lip needs re-fibreglassing again also :(

When it come to panels the Bonnet although recoverable, needs some work doing to the leading edge. Drivers door however has had it and its so bad that the lower half now flaps! The Passenger door has started to go again since its last rust repair, but I believe it also is recoverable.

Both rear wheel arches could ideally do with a bit of work, rust is starting to bubble, from where both have been reversed into walls (not by me ) and although repaired to stop the rust, have never been properly painted to match the car.

So today, I thought I'd start with the bodywork. Badly faded and oxidised paint, to the point where I though all was lost andgreen growth down one side of the car due to nearly 4 years worth of attack from the elements, but with a good wash, I could already see lots of room for improvement Next came the Clay Bar, doing it bit by bit, followed closely by T-Cut, again bit by bit - took me a while to work out how best to use the stuff, but my god is it good! - and then finished off with a layer of wax.

So we started off with this

A close up of just how bad it was
attachment.php

The Badly faded paint, the bodged wheel arch, and a nice none faded bit from where I've removed a broken piece of wheel arch trim.
attachment.php

So I started off by hand washing the car with some B&Q Car Wash Detergent I found laying about in the outhouse, and its surprising the different it has made.
The washed section on the right, and unwashed on the left.
attachment.php

And from a different angle, you and see the cleaned section closest and the line between the two going through the reflection of the butterfly.

Then I started with the Claying, T-cutting and Waxing.

Here are some after shots, first the roof - Pictures don't do it justice.
attachment.php

And in comparison to the top of the boot.
attachment.php

Then I decided to do the boot - By far the worst panel on the car.
First the top section T-cut'ed
attachment.php

Then the rest T-cut'ed
attachment.php

And then the whole boot T-cut'ed and Waxed
attachment.php

A comparison with the Side of the car.
attachment.php

Then I moved onto the rear side panel.
attachment.php

Then drivers door and wing.

I've managed to get the bonnet done also, but it was getting to dark to take pictures, and the N/S will have to wait until Friday to get done, but I'm certainly very pleased with the results! :D :slayer:
Right, its been a while and I've been busy with the 750L in the last week or so while we've had the sudden heat wave.

Here's some pictures of the headlight transplant I done at the end of August.

So what I've done in the last week or so is remove the engine bay wiring loom. Plan is to replace it as its been bodged and hacked so much due to earth problems etc in the past that although it all still works I'd rather tidy it up, and know exactly what I've got.

So started in the engine bay, and then removed the Dash Panel from inside the car to access the wiring that goes into it, and the Fuse board below it which all make up the main part of the cars wiring loom, incorperating the engine bay loom.

A few Skotch locks from modifications in the past
IMG_2152.JPG

Evidence of previous overheating of the headlight switch, which I know has happened twice since we've owned her.
IMG_2154.JPG

IMG_2157.JPG

IMG_21591.JPG

Turns out doing this job allowed me to fix another issue. The infamous none functioning temperature guage.
IMG_21601.JPG

Now Fixed :D (although these plugs are replaced with wiring loom anyway, but at least I know why it wasn't operating :)).
IMG_2162.JPG

Lower dash dropped shows the mass of other wires :p
IMG_2165.JPG

So - The engine bay

The ever increasing pile of removed parts

IMG_2217.JPG

So first part of cleaning the engine bay out involved using my air blow out tool to remove all the crap - Was also handy for seeing where the rust was and how bad it is as removes the paint from above the rusted area's.
IMG_2219.JPG

IMG_2222.JPG

Started to de-grease the engine bay. Done the top part of the air box and was really impressed with the results - more pic's of both parts done further down.
IMG_2284.JPG

IMG_22901.JPG

De-greasing the bulk head. Used to store a 1L bottle of oil between the spare wheel and the heater box. Spilt about 7 years ago and never really got moped up :p  so the de-greaser got to work :)

IMG_22981.JPG

Then went on to clean the rust up and treat it. Now just needs re-painting but haven't got any pic's of that yet, and I think we've had enough for now  :p

But just time for two more.

Decided to clean up the headgehogs whilst they're off on the wire brush attachment on the bench grinder.
IMG_2301.JPG

IMG_2303.JPG

Yes, I will have to hold my hand up to being parshal to a few cans of Coke when working on the cars, but I drink healthy most of the time, and only buy them when on offer at work, so I stock up :p (more so this time round as I'm leaving there so loosing my staff discount ).

And I nearly forgot.

A small video of Victoria running before then engine bay strip down :)

Just a bit of an update. Was busy with the mild weather on Boxing day, finally sorted the rust imperfections in the engine bay, sanded back, treated and painted with grey primer for now.

Modified the new wiring loom to house the new fresh feeds for the headlight relay kits I've made, and it looks  :D

I've also painted the engine and radiator mounts mat black :)

Another day off work today so I'm planning on possibly getting the wiring loom back into the engine bay.

Pics to follow when I've a spare 5 min.

Right, the following is going to be a tad on the pic heavy side :p

So, first of all, on a slightly none 750L related topic, here are some pic's of our 2 Selecta's I took with them together when swapping the not so mint one from one garage to the other and putting the Mint Selecta away for the winter :( :)

And on an even more random note, Silver bonnet on a blue mk3 - a temp measure when repainting the origional bonnet on sisters mk3 :ROFLMAO:
IMG_2331noplate.jpg

Moving swiftly back onto topic...the 750L :)

So since the past post with pic's I've done a fair bit, here and there.

I've made up my headlamp relay systems, should do the job nicely of stopping any new issues with the headlamp switch :D Here are the parts as ordered
IMG_23631.JPG

And once my creation had been completed - idea being they just plug into existing wiring loom so there is no chopping up needed, and connect to the fresh +ve and -ve feeds I've run to each headlamp unit.
IMG_20541.JPG

I ordered some 11amp wiring, ample to provide a +ve feed to the headlight units, cheap on eBay, a bit of a mistake though as I didn't hold much faith in its quality and thickness in comparison to 17amp wiring, even though I measured it and it is correctly rated. So for piece of mind I used 17 amp wiring  :spin: Here is the red 11amp next to a piece of blue 17amp.
IMG_2366.JPG

I've also installed the new wiring to the new headlamp relays, a fresh +ve feed to both headlight units from the battery, and new earth from each to the NS earthing hedgehog (y)

IMG_22882.JPG

IMG_22903.JPG

Here is a bit of a half finished job of the rust spots in the engine bay. None were serious, all only surface luckily. Will upload some more pics of it a bit more completed at some point.

IMG_2302.JPG

And heres some of my black bits  I've removed and cleaned up the radiator and fan mounts, OS engine mount bracket and a few other bits and sprayed them black :)
IMG_2337.JPG

IMG_2338.JPG

The Radiator mounts, one cleaned and one its its origional state :yuck:
IMG_2221.JPG

And I've removed the cooling fan and cleaned it up, origional plan was to use the cleaner motor off of dad's written off Selecta in the 750L but the blades just wouldn't come off of the existing motor, so used the if it aint broke don't fix it view and didn't force it too much.

Before the clean-up

Progress, the cleaned fin at the 3 o'clock possition looking an improvement on the rest

One Newish looking fan :yum:
IMG_2346.JPG

IMG_2347.JPG

Unfortunatly I had to remove the origional warning sticker as it was dog eared and I couldn't clean the housing with it in place, but I've made a replacement :p
IMG_2342.JPG

IMG_23481.JPG

And the cleaned mounting brackets in place
IMG_23601.JPG

And a minor horn upgrade. Air horn FTW :slayer:

Loving your work there Jon...

I have the same black painted items and am doing the fan tomorrow...:D..got to say I hope I can get the fan as good as yours. Did the one and only rad bracket today as the gits at the paint shop lost the other one!..:bang:

Still a nice new rad turned up in the post the other day...:D

That 750 is going to look great...and I WILL want to see it at brooklands!!...:)

The fan was remarkably easy, well the blades that I cleaned were, Baby wipes and a bit of elbow grease done the trick :)

The housing dad done, and got sent back to the kitchen sink for a 2nd round until I was happy with it  :D

Forgot to mention that on Wednesday I got the wiring loom back into place. Everything connected up, turned over and no spark :bang: Then noticed the lead from the wiring loom to the coil wasn't connected  one nut later and up she fires, first time after sitting for months :slayer:

Swapped the horns around and just need to be a bit of tidying in the engine bay before getting all the dash back together and bits inside the car. Although the engine bay wiring loom is from another 750L, it was removed from a 1992 J-reg, and it would appear the interior light wiring was run through the rear loom up the 'B' pillar, where as on Victoria the wires run up the 'A' pillars from the engine back, so some minor additional wiring has been required. Also means one of the two plugs for the connection to the rear loom won't marry up (n) So I've got to make a minor modification to that  :)

Thought of offering a kit for the lighting?? I would buy one and I'm sure others would too....

I had thought about it. Will guage interest :)

Give me a bell some point tomorrow and we'll discuss it, I'll advise of the provissions you'll need to make (no different to as discribed above mind).

The only thing is you will loose the dim dip feature unfortunatly. Works as either sidelights or full dipped beam.

"Oh yes" (y)coming along lovely. All the cleaning effort really is worth it when you seen it finished.

A little tip if I may. If you get a tin of silver and gold smooth hammerite you can pour the 2 into another container and mix until you get the almost exact colour of the metal brackets for the fan etc. I've done it a few times now and its hard to tell you don't have new ones, and, it protects the brackets for future. Every little helps.

This is all good timing, the fan and radiator are next for my 4x4. (y)

Nice work Jon, I certainly hope you bring it to the shows this year, bout time you turned up in a proper car ;).

I've heard you talk about the dim dip before, I know what it is from my Volvo days but I've never come across a Panda with it, can you enlighten me

It's located on the OS suspension strut on carbed models and above the radiator on Injection models. Makes the dipped beam headlights come on dim when the first position of the headlight switch is selected. (y)

Planning on having the Victoria booked for an MOT on Wednesday week (y) All being well, and subject to my mechanic being free to do it on that day. :)

Guess I'm sat in the wrong place to notice when I turn the lights on, will get out and have a proper look tomorrow. Yep, I know the unit you're on about, but I always assumed it was the resistor pack for the heater fan.
