Hello,

This guide is designed to help anyone replace or clean the MAF sensor on the Punto 1.9 JTD. Before following this guide, a good way to test the condition/problems with the MAF sensor, is to disconnect it with the engine off, and then take the car for a drive. If the problem goes away, or performance increases, then this would indicate a problem with your MAF sensor. I would suggest the first step would be to try and clean it with Contact cleaner (the type available from places like Maplin). If the problem persists, then the next best option is a new MAF. When purchasing your new MAF, don’t be fooled by cheaper after-market ones, as from experience, they tend to fail fairly quickly.

STEP1
Disconnect the battery terminals and the battery clamp. Remove the battery from the engine bay.

STEP 2
Undo the 3x 13mm bolts at the bottom of the battery tray and unclip the wiring loom from the back of the battery tray.

With the battery tray removed, you now have better access to the MAF sensor.

STEP 3
Remove the 3x 10mm screws from the top of the air filter box and also undo the metal clip that secures the air box to the intake pipe. Remove the plastic lid.

STEP 4
Undo the 2 x 10mm air box retaining bolts.

STEP 5
Take the air box out of the engine bay. (you need to twist it a bit anti-clockwise so that it disconnects from the air feeder pipe)

STEP 6
Undo the lower retaining clip from the MAF sensor housing

STEP 7
Pull the MAF sensor and upper air pipe straight up to remove it from the engine bay

STEP 8
At this point, if you are replacing the MAF sensor, then undo the remaining upper retaining clip and pull the MAF sensor and its housing away from the upper air pipe and replace. If you are cleaning the MAF sensor, then undo the 2 x 2.5mm Security Torx screws. (NOTICE! They are security torx bits and therefore have a raised lump in the middle and require a security torx bit to remove them!)

STEP 9
Remove the MAF sensor from its housing, and spray contact cleaner in the areas labelled.

Allow the MAF sensor to dry out before replacing.

Re-fitting is the reverse of the removal. HOWEVER, ensure that you have the MAF sensor facing the right way up. The open bits of the sensor should face towards the sky.

Hope that helps,
Alan
