Hi all, I’m posting this for my dad,
I happen to be out helping my dad on his 1975 124 1800 as he has noticed a fault when setting up his trickle charger. That isn’t the real issue but it’s enough for me to ask the internet a couple of questions. We bought the car a couple years ago and drove it a couple hours straight away, afterwards we go to work redoing the interior as we thought it was the only issue, this included replacing the dash. When we took the dash off and put back on and tried to start it it would ever actually start. We ended up finding that there was a short somewhere and it had melted the wiring harness inside the dash, after replacing it the car has still yet to start. I’ve tried a few things including new ignition coil, condensers on the distributor, and now we’ve finished up the brown wire method.
I guess what I’m wondering is what could possibly still be wrong, at this point the car doesn’t do anything upon turning the switch. When charging the battery the charger signals fault so I assumed the battery might’ve gone bad (couple year old Napa battery) so I switched it with my ‘79 X1/9’s battery and when turning the switch the lights on the dash turn on but no ignition and when feeling inside the ignition switch to see if there was a loose connection the wires were hot as well as the battery terminal wires.
Ive rechecked the brown wire and it is seemingly correct to the information I’ve seen and the new harness was made by someone who’s been doing fiat work since the 124 rolled onto the lots. The cars been sitting for 5 years now with occasional work and I’d like to drive it one last time before my dad gives up and sells it.
I appreciate any possible help, I’m at a complete loss of ideas.
