Very sadly, I need to get a replacement engine for my campervan and I'm looking for a good & affordable way to do this. It's a 2008 Fiat Ducato with engine number F1AE0481D.

A few questions I have, that I would love people's help with:
  1. What are the best places to find and order these engines? I've found a couple on Ebay and some other sites where you get sent quotes from suppliers but not sure who to trust.
  2. What are some questions I should ask / I need to make sure when ordering? Basically, any red flags or things to look out for?
  3. I don't quite understand how the engine codes so if my engine plate has F1AE0481D on it, and I find an ebay engine that is the exact same as mine but with no D at the end (so it's F1AE0481), will this work for me?
Thank you in advance!

If you are doing it on a shoe string budget , then you are in the hands of scrap dealers who will say an engine is low mileage with no real proof.
Then you have "engine re conditioners" some excellent, some crap, trouble is apart from recommendation how do you tell?
Obviously price is a consideration, however it make be worth asking the Fiat Dealers what their price is.
As an example Fords used to sell engines for quite a fair price on exchange, even taking back engines with holes in the side, the reason was to have control of the supply of recon units.
They didn't actually recon the old ones, so you got a genuine brand new engine.
Some years ago I had a customer whose son drove their car for some distance with no oil and the con rod punched a hole in the cylinder block, at the time you couldn't get anyone to sell you a recon unit, but I got a good price for a genuine one.
I believe one of my ex son in laws is still going that route on fairly new Ford Transits.
In the old days I used to rebuild engines as did most garages and there was local machine shops to do crank grinding and supplying new bearings, cylinder boring and new pistons etc. Labour charges these days and the fact that the "technicians" are not trained to do that sort of work these days means it has died out largely.

I think that the answer to question 3 above has to be NO, This Wikipedia article suggests that the F1AE0481C is a 2.3jtd, while the F1AE0481D is a 120 multijet.

I am not a fan of thanks in advance. Please engage with the forum, by sharing your significant experiences.

Why don't you let whoever is fitting it find the engine?
