My panda has 2 speakers in the dash. They are contained in ugly black plastic boxes. Actually I don't mind the boxes. But I really want nice sound quality.

Which car speakers will go in them boxes?

TBH you're not going to get nice sound quality from using a couple of 100mm speakers and a tape deck.

Best bet would be to build some door pods with a sizable speaker and CD/mp3 head unit.

I ended up making a simple baffle for some 4" X 6" ovals and slotting that into the dash. Taking great care not to worry about sound staging or looks. But it does the job I need just to be able to listen to music on the din of the engine :D

Haha...love it!...ugly plastic boxes that everyone normally wants...what can I say???
Any music/speakers are a personal preference, so dont get what your asking....Take the covers off your ugly plastic boxes...:D....and fit the speakers from the front instead of the back.

Easiest way to make an improvement would be to buy a pair of better quality 100mm speakers, they should be a straight swap in the pods for the ones you already have. You could also add another pair of 100mm's and fit them in the rear side panels, beside where the rear passengers sit.
But as was already mentioned, you really need to upgrade the head unit as well to make the most of new speakers.
Here's my solution, you may find it a little OTT though :p.

If you are going to re use the pods remember that you have very limited depth on the grilles at the front. If you plan to put them back on you can take as much as you like behind for chunky magnets but beware protruding tweeters on coaxials they won't fit. If you get some speakers that look OK without grilles fitted, great.
Personally think these have potential:

tiny grille on the front so they'll go on and use their own grille without hanging over the edge of the pods like most do.
as above though, new head will make more difference and ideally something a bit beefier speakerwise in the back to add some weight. Even some 13cm in the back panels makes a big difference.
