I have a 2016 fiat 500x . The warning light : service keyless entry system has activated. Does anyone have experience with this warning? What service is required? What is the problem or fix? Any input would be appreciated.

Might be worth:

1) putting new battery in key
2) clean the inside/back side of both the driver's and passenger's door handles. It is possible that a build of of dirt is signalling to the keyless system that there is a hand present but no other action like a door pull / opening
3) get a code reading done (assuming there is one)

thank you for your reply. I have replaced and changed the batteries in the key fobs. I will clean the door handles. The dealership said that it is a hard fault and not able to erase the message/warning from the dash. The fiat dealer wants to complete a diagnosis which can take up to 2-hour labour. They said the result might be the module which will cost less than $400. The keyless entry system is working just fine, but the warning light/message has appeared.

Out of general Interest for 500X owners with a more tecnical bias :) It often helps to now how a system works and where the major compoents are even if you are not able to work on the system yourself. Least when a garage/dealer starts rambling on you know what they are talking about, or even if they know what they are talking about!

Hi,
Have you managed to find any solutions? I am having the same problem.
The message won’t go away but everything seems to be working fine.
Had a test run and the error code has come up but I’ve tried one garage they didn’t understand what it meant.

I have the exact same car, same issue, came up at about the same time (in the past few weeks)! My local shop.. not a FIAT specialist but they've worked on my car effectively before.... says minimum $175 diagnostic charge to see what's up. Did you do the "code reading"? I don't even know what that is, but will research it.

This is way above my head, but I learned something I think. Thank you!

My FIAT service centre in Vancouver, Canada replaced the RFHub radio frequency hub module. The shop discovered water leaking into the RFhub which caused the malfunction. I understand the RFhub is located on the driver's rear quarter panel of the vehicle. they also replaced the passive entry module. They repaired the water leak. Everything now works correctly but after spending almost $1,000 Canadian. They also had to reprogram the two keys.

Thanks for your reply. Not what I wanted to hear ($1000!), but it's good to know you got it fixed. The FIAT service center in Portland (OR) wanted me to leave it for up to a week for their dx and fix. I would have to pay for a rental car. I'll share with my local mechanics what you learned. They thought they could figure it out in a day.🤞

Hi. I am having the same issue, and this start happening a day after I took the car to a local garage to have the oil replaced. They also replaced the key battery and number plate bulb light.
I`ve never asked the garage to replace the key battery and the number plate bulb light, there was nothing wrong with them. I usually do those my self as they are easy jobs, takes 1 minut.
The car was spot on untill then. Never had a single issue with the keyless system. I was just wondering if this issue is related to what ever they did.

Good to know a cleanup sorted the problem. What year and chassis number is your 500X Cross? Mine is a 2015 Cross Plus re. built by Fiat on 12/06/2015 with chassis P3581nn. Might give us a clue as to what year(s) etc. are affected by this water ingress. Maybe only later builds?

My is a 2015 500 xcross 1.6 Multijet diesel (P356340 VIN last 7) and yep we've got some heavy rains and I found some water in there ...
Another additional place to look before going to a dealer or other service )

Has it been good this winter?

Local (Salem Oregon) mechanic updated the software in a couple of hours (max) while I waited and problem solved! (My car is a 2016 500X.) I can't remember what they charged but it was a lot less than $1000.

I've had the check keyless entry warning happening for a little while. I was mostly still working properly, but sometimes took longer to recognise the key.
So I switched off the passive entry option on the headunit until I could get round to doing to something about it.

Things took a turn for the worse on Sunday when neither remote fob (using the button) would open the car. I used the key blade to open the car which caused the alarm to go off. I had to pull the quick release off the negative terminal on the battery to get it to stop. Putting the negative back on caused the alarm to fire again. I pulled the F10 fuse from the fuse box (horn) to stop the alarn making noise, though the blinkers were still flashing (though they stop after a while. So I currently have an immobilised car on the drive that won't recognise the feyfob button being pressed. I regret switching of the passive entry as it was recognising the key most of the time.

Anyway, reading this thread I took a look at the RFHub in the boot and can see some water ingress damage. My car is a 2015 build, vin p3621XX.
Does anybody know does the RFHub receive the remote button signals in addition to the keyless entry signals?
I've still to check the BCM to check for any damage to it as well.

I will try to clean the PCB and see if it makes any difference, but will try to find out if anyone near by could try to fix the PCB. If the car was mobile I would probably just take it to a fiat specialist, just want to avoid the hastle of arranging and paying for a lorry to take it there too.

I can see a few places online can either attempt a fix or clone your data onto a new or used RFhub.
