Fuel gauge wiring may present a problem. I have attached a sst of diagrams that includes the others. These diagrams are extracted from the German language workshop manual for the x230 model, that is available in the downloads section. Unfortunately some have been scanned upside down, so you may have to stand upside down in pennance.

Thank you for your input was useful. I still have one problem. Fuse no 7 has a dead short on it .It should just serve the left dipped beam. I think it effecting the Hazard warning lights as they are not working. The indicators left and right work OK. The headlamp height adjuster are also not workin. Any ideas except for the 5 liters of petrol, and a macht.....

As F7 is shown as connecting directly with the headlight, may I suggest testing with the headlight disconnected. How did you discover this? Was it by F7 blowing, or were you testing with a multimeter? The faulty hazard lights could be due to a problem with the switch. Are the headlight adjusters electrically operated? Some older vehicles used a hydraulic system.
