Hi,

I'm having trouble using a U480 Diagnostic Tool on my wife's 2000(W reg) Punto ELX. The power steering has died :(.

As far as I can tell I am following the instructions to the letter and it does work on my Peugeot 106 .

When I plug the tool into the OBDII socket it powers up from the socket and displays the "MEMOSCAN U480" message. The instructions then tell me to switch on the ignition (without starting the engine) and then press the Enter button. The tool then displays "Wait..." while looping through the protocols, eventually showing the "LINK ERROR" message.

Can anyone confirm they have sucessfully used this tool on a Punto of this age or possibly older?

Thanks.

Hi,

I havent tried that particular tool but my old Punto HGT ('00 W reg) wouldnt work with any OBD2 scantools or ELM interfaces out of the box. The protocol is the same but the data exchanged over it is slightly different (they expect the ecu has to be at address of 33h whereas the older Puntos ECU is at address 16h).

If you know someone that has one try it on a post Jan 2001 Petrol car to make sure your reader works - but I'm 99% sure it wont work with your 2000 Punto. A lot of ebay adverts list them as compatible with the Punto mk2 but its not strictly true, it will only be compatible with the 2001> Petrol Punto.

I had loads of messing around to get DTC codes out of my old punto, had to make a cable and use some very buggy software to get the job done - it did work but nowhere near as handy as a handheld unit im afraid.

Huge thanks Dan for your reply - you've been really helpful!

I'll look into the laptop + cable + software route for furture fixes but in the short term I guess it's a trip to the Fiat dealer for a code read.

No probs, just whatever you do I wouldnt waste your money on an ELM interface, they dont seem to work properly with the software thats out there.

Look into Unidiag (search yahoo groups) - its free, and the only software I could get to work with my old Punto - dont know if it talks to the steering ECU though.
