Well I'd be interested if I could legally drive it away :)

Not at the moment sorry, and if it was drivable away it would be quite a few pennies more :p

Why can't you? Just insure it & drive it to a pre-booked MOT. As long as it's roadworthy (in the sense of looks ok if stopped) you can legally do that (the only time you don't need MOT or tax) - and there's no stipulation about distance, I've checked and the local police weren't aware of any!

I thought all insurance was invalidated without tax and mot?

You'd need to check your policy wording. I think they usually refer to being roadworthy & driven legally. Roadworthy is not the same as having an MOT although people assume that's what the definition is (see how far you get when the police stop you with 4 bald tyres and you say it's ok, the MOT is valid!) and you are driving legally without tax in that situation (assuming you have a licence!). It's a slightly moot point, but you can always check with your insurer - I think you'll find you're covered on a non MOT'd car going to a prebooked test, or away from it having failed (unless it's dangerous)?

Well I really don't want to risk it legal or not, I've been lucky with all my long distance car buys and collection sagas so far and this one has proved it's a panda too far!

Besides I've got quite enough on my plate with considering a house purchase - a half built one at that

Half built is perfect! Stop them messing about with building useless things like bedrooms and get them to make more parking spaces (y)

That's why I suggested driving to a VIC check on route. It's the only way you could do it legitimately. Suffolk to Halifax in a ropy collision damaged Panda?

I'd pass up that opportunity to loose my licence as well.
