Hello there.
TLDR: is the 1.6 multijet that loud or was the car I was trying out damaged in some way?
I was looking for a newer car to buy, and the 1.6 Multijet Tipo Station Wagon came up my radar. I own a 2004 Stilo with the 1.9 8v engine and I'm quite happy with it, so I would like a car similar to it. But as soon as I started up the Tipo I was trying out, I noticed something unpleasant - the diesel rattl/noise was quite significant, in fact much more intense than in my Stilo, which isn't exactly known to be a quiet car. Could there be something wrong with the car I was trying out, or could the noise be omnipresent on all diesel tipos? It seemed such a step back in refinement it caught me off guard. If it is a common trait of those engines, could enough sound deadening bring it more up to standard with the current cars (such as vag diesels?) or is it just the lost cause. I like everything else about the car but having a tank/tractor engine on loudspeakers under the bonnet really messes with the image of the car. I'd like to ask those of you with the 1.6 engine about your experiences with it.
thanks :)

I had a 1.6D and yes it was a bit of a rattler when cold. The direct injection common rail deisesl are noisier especially when cold. When warmed through it was better. The 1.6D is a real gem and exceptionally economical. I would try another Tipo and see if its the same to be sure. I reckon my 1.6D was running better at the time I sold it (gearbox noises) than when new. I would have another 1.6D in a heartbeat. and the Tip with 120hp ought to be great. Certainly the Bravo is capable of 100mpg if you try hard and I think 100K ay 64mpg was acceptable for a decent sized 4/5 seater. My car was 105hp and 234lb/ft of torque. The performance was always OK and when towing it was just so capable. I have had many diesels over the years. Ford. 1.6 adn 2.0, PSA 1.6, 1.7 and 1.9 Vauxhall 1.6 and 2.O.and the VW 1.6,1.9 and 2.O I rate the 1.6 Fiat as best I ever had and by a notable margin. Rarely did you need more than 2000rpm, hence easy economy.
