So, before I have people come and give me quotes on rust removal I figured I should remove the rust as best I could so I wasn't just being given random figures. And I took pitcures :)... or maybe its :(, not sure yet.

So the picture I took today of the windscreen rust came out badly, but I have a good before picture from the day it got home:

It was quite worrying but after I dug it out there's actually more metal in there than i thought.

That's probably the most expensive bit to have done, but depending on how much gets quoted I might have to just make do with stopping the rust and coming back to it in a year or two time when I have the money to have that properly fixed.

The rest of these are just the other spots, the passenger side sill at the rear is quite bad but it should be an easy fix because it's all flat panels and you can get at it.

The stuff in the rear wheel arches we won't have welded because they're not structural. I'm not particularly impressed at myself either but I really don't have the resources to blow them all on welding just now.

Rear passenger wheel arch, this has been fixed BADLY a number of times:

After  :

This also goes through to the wall of the sill on the underside of the car with another sizeable hole in it!

Passenger sill toward the front:

This isn't as bad as it looks though as it's largely surface rust, it had just rusted up again before I took a photo.

Rear boot:

Drivers front quarter panel, once again just surface rust but the size of the bubble had me worried:

at least you don't live over here, you're car would be much, much worse. symphasise with the rust issues though, my MG i pulled off the jacking point (using my hand) then pushed my finger through the sill without any effort. :( hopefully though it's just the one section that's rotten.

Saw an X1/9 obviously fresh from some work at the garage i went to on tuesday for quotes for the welding, it was spotless! really wouldn't mind one....

No one wants to come and do the welding :(

I'm okay with taking it to a body shop, it's just a bit more work is all, but no one is willing to come out and quote me either and I REALLY don't want to stick it on a tow truck to take it get quotes because that gets expensive way too quickly.

going through exactly the same thing here. i can't get car to garage for quotes, and they won't even give rough quotes so i know what sort of price they may charge. (n) it's a lot of hastle to get the car anywhere for the work, let alone to take it to some garage to just get a quote, or be told they can't do it.

have you tried taking lots of pictures and taking them with you? i've been meaning to do this, but found a local garage where they're coming to have a look at it, so i'm waiting on them at the moment.

I hadn't actually thought about that, I guess I could give it a try but I have a fair idea what most peoples answers will be. Can't hurt though, I guess, trouble is that windscreen rust is the deal breaker although that corner join in the car isn't as complicated as it is in most cars but they really need to see it to understand.

I was real lucky with mine. I had bought a cheap welder to do the work myself but in the end a friend of mine, who is a qualified welder, came over and did the work.
