General Sylvia....

Well, she got to meet her younger but slightly less worldly wise cousin!

It's amazing how much the new panda is bigger on the outside and smaller on the inside... The old panda's are very Tardis like. The lack of the huge dashboard and the smaller seats makes the usable space in the old car seem so much bigger.

Also the fuel consumption is more than I expected too...

On the run back from England I put 497 miles on the NovoPanda and from when I bought it on Saturday last week, I've stuck in 60 quid of fuel over all(there's about half a tank left) but with the litres/miles thing on the first tank(6.8 gallons took me 302 miles of mainly 60/65 mph on the motorway) it wasn't just as hot as I thought it would be on economy/consumption compared to last months collection of the old shape panda 1108cc which gave me 53mpg covering the same sort of roads.... Suppose the older Panda only weighs 750 kg, lacks power steering, had direct ventilation which doesnt require the fan running all the time and the engine is smaller making it more efficient...

Just goes to show it's not all progress even if the new one is like a mini merc compaired the classic shape:eek:

Prob may be solved, but just ab idea,... Have u checked the main POS+ cable from battery. If its like most other fiats I've had over the yrs, the cable goes BATT-STARTER-WIRING LOOM. Seen em fray off, go raggy and bust on the starter and that'll give you all sorts of problems. Might be worth a check mate??

If the new one is brand new - delivery mileage - it will probably be rather "tight" and the consumption will improve over the first few thousand miles.

The power steering has vistually no effect on consumption as it's electronic and only uses a bit of power when it's doing something, unlike old school hydraulic power steering which knocks a few MPG off as the fluid is pumped all the time.

Although the new Panda is heavier than the old one, the multipoint engine management is more accurate than SPI, or the average carburettor, so I'd expect mid 50's or 60 at the sort of speed on a run when it's loosened up, unless you have very heavy feet.

I can get low 50's out of a 1.2 Punto at those kind of speeds... average 49 over 2K miles, including commuting.

No, it's second hand with 19K on it so it would be well run in and filters are new. Thou it depends how you work out the fuel consumption. If you brim the tank, drive and then brim the tank again it's 43mpg but the on-board trip computer is saying that over the same I was doing 52mpg. It's just the MK1 has not trip so I'd to work it out manually so it was the same with the Novopanda....

That's disappointing then.

My consumption for the first few thousand miles was worked out from mileage travelled according to the odometer and litres added to the tank, ignoring the first fill.

These days I let the computer give me a guide. It is a bit optimistic, compared to calculated, but not to the tune of 9 mpg.

The 2B version of the Punto has an optional read-out of current MPG, and I often end up trying to get high figues on that display - it makes little difference to journey times, and I generally catch up with the madding crowd just as they clear the obstruction they've rushed towards, and continue without stopping.

It's stop-start that really kills my MPG, as does the first mile or two from cold, but the Punto warms up very quickly according to the meter.

As a matter of interest, does the new Panda run to a temperature gauge?

Well.... I got the brillo pad out an Sylvia is a bit lighter on the graphics front!

They'd started to peel really badly and I've sold the space on the roof to one of the belfast bars (like where else would I want to spend all night with a collection bucket? A church hall????) for a spread in the sunday life and a fundraiser night!

Ah now, if you drag your panda round the planet a few times you'll get to find that all that love, attention and emotion you pour into sometimes sticks inside it and it gains it's own personality. She may not beep at appropriate times but she's just as human as 'Herbie':)
