General Strange noise from the clutch/gearbox

Couple of days ago my active sport developed a rather annoying noise. no problem selecting gear, and car pulled away OK and drove fine....however soon as you applied some throttle to accelerate or go up a hill there was a kinda screeching clicking noise. First thought was CV....
Today it let me know exactly what the problem was....soon as throttle applied Revs shot up car speed didn't increase (commonly known as a slipping clutch)...
My guess is the screeching clicking noise was one of the anti chatter springs was knacked, as it didnt sound like a Thrust bearing does when it goes.
I guess a year and a half of using car for my previous job finally caught up with the clutch, lot of Mileage (22000 in 16 months) and an awful lot of stop/start driving...good part is new job and mileage down to 7 miles a day now :D
Car already booked in for replacement (i know a Garage that is gonna do it cheap for me i.e. not sting me on labour costs) so will be sorted next week....meantime i have to use the missus Corsa :(

So much for sorting....New clutch fitted no prob, 2 days later clutch slipped so went and had a word with my friend there......who now mentions to me that his mechanic said there was a lot of oil in there but it was nowhere near the clutch, although he did also say the original clutch was completely knackered......Now gotta take the car back again :bang:
I assume oil in the bell housing is input shaft oil seal ? and since i still got a noise when i pull away i'm guessing the bearing shot too

So to close out this thread: Got the car back from the garage & had a chance to feel just how much movement there was in the 1st motion shaft bearing. Can only describe it as FUBAR.

The clutch, as I expected had been changed recently, well before I got the car as per the receipt that came with the cars history pack so that wasn't changed. Remanufactured gearbox has got the upgraded bearings on all the shafts & works just as it should.

As it was a gearbox swap, & the garage doing the job got the box in before the car went in it only took a day to do the job. £450 changed hands & my niece is out & about in it again.

quick update....New clutch was fitted, and still had an issue with clutch slipping. The clicking noise got worse and turned out to be Input shaft bearing so 1st 2nd and 3rd were noisy, 4th and 5th were ok.
Quick trawl on ebay and managed to find a 2nd hand box for £99 with free delivery....My mate's garage fitted it and only had 2 minor isssues. 1st was replacement box didnt have the drive for the speedo (so i guess it was from a later ABS model as it wasn't fitted at all) so they used the drive and housing from my original box, 2nd was reverse light switch had to be swapped from my old box.
All sorted out now. clutch no longer slips and replacement box is a dream compared to my old one. Gear changes are now nice and silky smooth again and only noise from driving was actually road noise from the tyres, the difference in noise makes me think the diff was probably wearing on the old box.
Total cost was around £350 which isn't bad for a replacement clutch and a replacement box plus all fitted.

My (new) 2nd hand £99 Box looking nice and clean :).... compared to what came out :(
Basically old box was horrible oily mess....notice pics of inside of bell housing, i'm pretty sure it isn't supposed to look like that ! No wonder the Clutch was slipping:cry:

Makes me wonder if my noise is also the.input bearing.....

Ziggy

Best way i can describe the noise....
If you've heard the noise a CV makes when it's gone... it was like that but pretty much constant in 1st,2nd and 3rd gear (steering position made no difference)...also did it when engine was at idle and out of gear.
4th and 5th gear are different shafts within the box (if i read the description i found on the net properly) so use different bearings hence no noise.

People are now swappin them from ball bearings to roller bearings

Got a spare inout bearing sat in my shed... probably will just use that vs the uograde as new should last a while anyway

I haven't yet decided whether to keep the old box and clean it up and then strip it and replace the bearings when the weather gets better..or ditch it and just keep the new box in.
New box may be second hand but it seems to be working fine, not a single issue with it, car is a delight to drive again.
Also if the bearings and seals need doing in the old box i'm wondering how worn the gears themselves are. Might be a waste of time reconditioning it.
