Hi all,

I think my TA has a Start&Stop problem. Frequently when I come to a stop with the car in neutral and the clutch up, the engine doesn't stop. It is intermittent as sometimes it does stop, but I can't work out a pattern. I've read the manual, and all of the conditions that prevent start&stop stopping the engine are not there (engine warm, 10 degrees outside temp, heated window off, wipers off, doors shut, seat belts fastened) but still the engine runs. There are no error lights and the system hasn't been disabled. Very occasionally when the engine does stop, it will restart itself without me putting my foot on the clutch. Again, this is by design but only if one of the factors that should prevent the motor stopping in the first place comes about during a stop, like turning on the heated rear screen. The car is currently at a Fiat dealer and is behaving itself, and there are no stored errors so they are going to give it back unchanged.

It's not my imagination and I think it must be a sensor giving incorrect values. Has anyone seen anything similar or have any ideas?

Cheers, Nick

Very occasionally when the engine does stop, it will restart itself without me putting my foot on the clutch.

Mine did this yesterday. Could have been my doing as my foot was hovering the clutch and I might have pressed it but it would have been very, very lightly.

Yes, it will do this if you have the radio or fan or anything on what so ever using electricity.

It restarts the car when the voltage from the battery drops below a certain point so as to not let the battery get so flat it can't start the engine.

I do feel that it restarts a little too quickly sometimes, but it does depend on ambient temperature as a cold battery will give less power than a warm one.

You may well be right on the battery charge idea, as when the car comes to a stop from higher speeds the engine's more likely to stop. Plus it has been fairly cold recently. Having said that I drive the car 30 miles on the motorway every day so it has time to get a decent charge, maybe my battery is faulty? I'll get a volt meter on it at the weekend.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I'm finding that with the colder weather mine needs to be warmed up to at least 3 'blobs' on the temp gauge before the engine will stop itself. In the warmer weather, it only needed to be on the second mark on the gauge, clearly ambient air temperature is a factor..

Having read so many threads regarding s&s problems, i have started feeling lucky for not spec it.

S/S should come with all the F500 models now unless it's different in Greece. I remember Ahmett didn't get it but I thought that was just a case of the dealer 'pulling a fast one on him'. Despite all the 'talk' on the FF and the Poll result for the majority it does appears to work most of the time. For urban crawlers it should save between 3-4mpg.

Mine does it too... if the car is still cold or the battery is not at a certain charge it will not switch off. Its a built in safety so you dont damage the battery with starting it every few miles. It happened with the two demo cars (1.4 and Diesel) I drove and mine does the same.

Also now that its quiet cold in the morning the battery might need a bit more time to get warmed up.

Hope this helps mate

I really wouldn't assume that because anything is standard in one country that it will be the same across the board - especially with something like S&S which has "value" only if you are ecological or if fuel is expensive.

I wonder if it would be standard in the Gulf - where my colleague pays less than £10 to fill up her Volvo XC90. Funnily enough, like everyone else she has the V8 model...
