Technical Stilo Abarth Electrical problems inc hazards and mainbeam,

Hi Guys,

Just joined the forum after purchasing a Stilo Abarth. Didn't take long before the electrical faults started to appear!

Basically every so often when I turn the engine off the hazard warning lights come on and i cant turn them off. Then when i turn the ignition on again the mainbeam headlights show on the dash and and I can turn them or the hazards off.

I then have to start the car drive down the road for a bit and usually they go off and I can then turn the hazards off.

I love my Stilo and would appreciate any ideas you may have.

Do you have an alarm on it? That's often wired up to hazards and main beam.

I presume the car is fitted with a standard Fiat alarm?

After the hazards come on if i then start the car the mainbeam light on the dash comes on and i can't turn either of them off without driving for a short period. Very occasionally when driving this will also happen and the computer says all the doors are open including the boot and the hazards start to flash and mainbeam light also appears on the dash?

Regarding the alarm i only have the original remote key fob that opens the doors and a small LED flashes on the drivers door so i presume it is the factory fitted fiat alarm system.

Nope, All Stilos have that. Alarms were all optional factory extra's iirc, will have interior ultra sonics if its got the oem alarm

Don't think its an alarm problem as it doesn't have one. I have just replaced the battery and thought it was resolved yet driving along today and it beeps the hazard warning lights come on, the main beam comes on, the fuel cut off warning shows on the dash, a picture of the car with all doors and boot open warning comes on and after about 20 seconds the car goes back to normal but the hazards remain on. Also when this happens I can't turn off the main beam lights or the hazards for the 20 or so seconds while all this happening so it's dangerous for other cars coming in the opposite direction when my main beam comes on all by it's own!

Any suggestions for this puzzling fault?

I believe his problem may have something to do with the fuel cutoff switch. Basically, His car constantly believes is has been in a crash. There may be something wrong with the hazard switch itself.

Pilko, do you still have all your airbags on the car? Has it ever been in a crash?

that sounds like it would do it! coinsidentally atm my car has no bumper is there a sensor which can "detect" this? where is the fuel cut-off in the stilo? and wouldnt that mean the car wouldnt start?

Yes, you are right, the car shouldn't start if the fuel cutoff is on. That's why I'm thinking maybe this is an electrical error somewhere.

The device is inertial, meaning it detects sudden stops of the car and acts accordingly.

The fuel cutoff switch is on page 70 in the Stilo Guide. Doesn't really say anything about hazard lights being on in case of a crash though, nor the fact that the computer should say that all the doors are open in case of a crash, just unlocked, so this may not actually apply in our case, I'm not sure.

I have all the airbags and it has never been in a crash. Sometimes if I get out of the car and lock it the hazards come on and the sidelights also.

It it totally random and very confusing.

Mine randomly winds down the back drivers side window, or refuses to wind up the front. No rhyme or reason.
