Technical Stiffening with foam

I riveted ally sheets to where the rear quarter cards were......went round a roundabout hard, and 2 rivets shear off and bounced around the cabin.
Surly that was telling me things are flexing.....as ive never had rivets shear for no reason

Yeah that's quite a lot of force....

Was there any elongation of the holes in the ally sheet or was it pure shear failure of the rivet?

I presume youre talking of 6mm or 8mm rivets?

cannot remember much, can measure the holes sometime tho.

all i remember is going round the round about.....a f****ng big bang, me nearly s***ing meself and a rivet head ricocheting off everything

Stiffening with foam: yes it works, but all it will do is stiffen up the beam it is in, ie foam in the sill will stiffen up the sill, not the whole shell. Yes it may add a very small proportion to the overall shell stiffness, but I would guess not to a noticable level. To stiffen up the shell as a whole means applying something to the whole shell, ie cage or internal bracing.

I have seen rivets fail at very low shear levels, mainly due to dirty holes. Any edge or pip left in the hole can act as a stress raiser and make the rivet break at a much lower level than you would expect. Thats why you really need to drill a few holes, then cleco the plate, then drill more holes and rivet as you go, it avoids any hole misalignment which can also pinch the rivet tails.

cages stiffen things up but with the OMP cage i have (no door bars), if i jack a corner up, the doors are still abit funny to shut.

Dunno what my sparco cage will be like, it's got door bars but i plan to stick probers ones in

I think that due to the flexibilty in the chassis that any major beam like a sill in a cento will increase chassis stiffness to a noticeable degree.
