Hi folks. I know torque sensor issues are well-trodden ground but haven't found much discussion of issues with MES calibration (but happy to be pointed....)

I've been called in to help with a 4x4 (2006) 1.2 petrol. The torque sensor has been replaced (not by me) but on starting the engine, the wheel spools fully to the right.

OK, calibration required thinks I. But the torque sensor calibration fails to execute as "Incorrect conditions to run this test!"

I wonder if this means the new sensor is too misaligned to be corrected with software? Though it was installed after marking both halves of the column, I am told.

I did note there isn't a specific 4x4 software group on MES, and wondered if that was relevant.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Many thanks!

Nick

Thanks for that. The position sensor calibration completes OK, it's the torque sensor one that doesn't plus there aren't any errors.....
I am missing something

The Torque and/or Angle Sensor is the same component just different names

It should show 0 degrees on a scantool with the wheels pointing straight ahead, if it's calibrated correctly

My money would be on a misalligned sensor.
I took the complete column out to a workbench (well actually it was the dining table) and could allign it very good (start with straight wheels!) and it didn't even need calibration. Did that weeks later.

I do get 0 degrees on MES when I hold the wheel (against assistance) at the straight ahead, but let it go and it spools over forcefully to the right....

Thanks - yes, I was thinking that. Calibration can only happen within a very narrow window of sensor position then, I take it. (Noting there is about 4mm play within the splines the detection tabs sit in, from reading writeups of how to do it here). I will get the thing apart shortly and have a look/play.

The steering wheel is moving, because it thinks torque is being applied to it, even though there isn't any

The upper and lower discs of the sensor are free to move, the angle difference measured between the two should be the amount of torque been applied at the the steering wheel

My guess the pin that keeps the two half's aligned was pulled before it was fully assembled, and it's an installation mistake, not sure how simple it is to fix

I don't see any option except trying to install it again
