Hi, I have a 1.3multijet 05 plate. The starter has been a bit temperamental but now has packed in altogether. I hear a click from the engine bay but it doesn't crank at all. Replaced the starter and battery, checked the earth. Still nothing.
Any suggestions?
Also can anyone explain how the starter works? There doesn't appear to be a connection for the solenoid to operate on the ignition. Just a permanent connection to the battery and alternator on one post and a link from the solenoid to the starter on the other post. Any other starter I've seen has three connections.
Thanks

You have left a wire off. It's not on a separate terminal. It has a large diameter ring tag that goes over the insulator on the stud that the lead to the battery goes to. It sits on a connection from the solenoid and there should be a plastic sleeve between it and the heavy cable lug that keeps it clamped in place.

Thanks for your help Robert.
I think what I've done is just clamped that big ring between the leads for the alternator and the battery without the plastic bit.
Do you have any thoughts on how the starter operates?

All the best
Ian

Hi,
The ground is through the casing, power through the heavy lead on the stud. To engage the starter the thin wire with large ring tag needs to put 12V on the metal contact arrowed in the photo. If you don't have the proper spacet to keep the ring tag in contact a short length of hose e.g. fuel or vacuum / breather hose will work. if if you don't have any that is a sliding fit on the insulator you can slit it length ways and then put a small cable tie around it.

Got it now. The connection to the solenoid is at the bottom of the +ve post but insulated from the post.

Thanks again for your help.

Same as the new one. It was just I was working under the car with restricted vision, took off the nut on the post and took all the cables off without looking where they went.
Adding to the problem was that the base of the post on the new starter was 1mm wider than the old one and the connection from the ignition didn't fit over it.
I filed out the connector to the correct size, put it all back together and we're back on the road again. :)
