The ones a few years ago who sounded just like Sting and the Police were annoying. Sorry cant be arsed to remember who they were but hey - Millennials bought it.

Here's a new one from Adele, complete with acoustic piano, same key, same intonation, same husky sound, same angst. Not.

Lauren Daigle is really good but why is she copying Adele's style with no citation for the inspiration?

For what it's worth from an old git, to me they all sound the same these days, dull,nasal & wanting to cut your wrists:bang: But hey, that's my take on the music nowadays.
 
I agree especially as two blokes (Amercan and Swedish) write most of the songs and nobody wants to do anything different. They all want to look the same (check out the FaceBook selfies used by the press - they really do all look the same). They all want to sound the same (check out any boy band or aspiring pop star). The 1960's fake American accent had nothing on today's identikit wailers.

The girl in the OP is really very good but not a patch on Adele which is probably why she's borrowed her style so accurately.

I put Adele in a category of her own. Caro Emerald is another who ploughs her own furrow and Joe Bonamassa does some great blues stuff.
 
I was born in the 50's & during the 60's & the 70's I was heavily into "my" music. These were heady days when Britain ruled the world in popular music industry. I remember going shopping for my mother to the village shop & in the corner up high on a shelf lay one of those large radios, the kind with big valves, blaring out the top pop tunes of the day, ah! happy times, & then the 70's came, full of heavy rock & songs to remember:slayer: I could go on but these days are long gone now.
 
I was never a fan of heavy rock but later in life realised that below the blare there's some really good music. I guess the skilled cover versions changed my mind. People like Gabriella y Rhodrigo doing Orion and Luca Stricagnoli doing Thunderstruck show just how good the original writing was. Then you go back and reevaluate the originals.

The exceptions here are Abba. Nobody (IMO) comes close to their original skill (composition and delivery) and production values. Benny and Bjorn actually said when they did the score for Mama Mia film that they'd really no detailed idea how they achieved the sounds. The originals were laid down a few times and edited with no score kept of the fine detail. The girls added their skills and the rest is history.
 
Abba in my day, they came out in 1972, were deemed a bit cheesey, especially with my peers, but there was a small following. Back in the day nobody would own up owning an album..;) Fast forward forty odd years & they are more in demand than ever. That's how it goes sometimes.

Music as they say is like food. Keep on truckin.:cool:
 
Dead right about Abba. Nobody would admit to liking them, yet Pete Waterman and even Brian May said they were the best song writers of the day. They don't get copied or even covered very much because so few can compete with the original.

Agnetha's talent was (and is) in another level compared to everyone else (except Annifrid). Waterman said "Dancing Queen" is the best pop song ever. May said similar stuff about "Winner Takes it All". Reportedly, she only did one take for the recording and she smacked it out of the county. No "autotune" post production bodge on this.



I like the later stuff e.g. "Soldiers" and "The day before you came". Really got to feel for that poor guy she dumps after one impromptu date.

Choosing music that you like is the very fact... every one is right & every one is wrong. Bit of a cliche I know, but there are many music tastes out there. At the minute I'm listening to Credence clearwater revival. Massive in their time but short lived. Have you ever seen the rain, was a haunting song for instance that left me feeling warm all over & more. They have other songs that hit the spot. Creedence were up there right enough....:cool:

Yup, like him too. Got one of his CDs - "dog house music". Quite like Cheryl Crow too - "Maybe Angels" etc. Like a good bit of bass! I also like this sort of "Chuck Berry" sort of thing:



Of late I'm heading more towards that discordant sort of sound that Ry Cooder almost found



and the old guy, sitting on his own on a rotten porch somewhere down in the louisiana bayou, with his battered old acoustic, does so well.



Then there's always the "Old Crow Medicine Show"



Phew!

My older boy had his own Heavy metal band "Sons Of Slaughter" He was founder member and lead guitar also wrote a lot of the stuff - Not really my thing, but if you must? "Sons Of Slaughter" Here they are but keep the volume down when you trigger it! Mind you they were very big in Norway!



He also plays absolutely beautiful spanish and other guitar.
 
Pretty much anyone playing with Jools Holland and friends. Marc Almond's cover of his own Tainted Love was probably better than the original. But they were not ripping off another's style and sound.

On the subject of just as good as it gets, how could this guy not get a mention.

Because Adele sells. Also to a degree she's been popular for a while so stage and music schools have been teaching her style. Similar to Lilly Allen after her spotlight burned out there were a few soundalikes.

It goes further back than all that. Oasis were a Beatles tribute act. Spice Girls were literally "five Betty Boo's". Take That were a low rent New Kids on the Block.

For every original idea there are a million rip off merchants looking for a quick quid.

It's the foundation of the music industry.
 
Elvis of course wasn't doing a different song in Carl Perkins' style.

Roxy Music cover of Jealous Guy by John Lennon.

Marc Almond's cover/reprise of "Tainted Love" done with Jools Holland was I think by far the better version.

Adele's "Make You Feel My Love" is a Bob Dylan song.

Gary Jules "Mad World".

All are great covers that respect the originals but non of them try to copy the original and they all use their own style.
