:bang: I purchased a new shift knob for my 84 spyder. I feel quite inept in that I cannot get the old shift knob off the shaft. Does it unscrew or just pull off? I didn't want to force it and break something. Has anyone removed the old shift knob? If so how? :worship:

If it is the orignal knob it unscrews. Sometimes if it has been on there for a long time you will have to use maybe a vise grip type tool but wrap the shift stick with some cloth so you wont damage it. then give it a couple of quick twists. If it is an aftermarket knob then there may be a small screw in the shaft holding it on.

exactly. lefty loosy righty tighty. Looking down at the top of the knob, turn the knob counter clockwise to remove, if it is the variety that still has the original 10mm x 1.25 threads. however, there have been a plethora of "one size fits all" aftermarket knobs sold in recent years that use either a screw or a hex-drive set screw to hold the knob on the shaft.

you may have to wrap a rag around your chrome shifter shaft and grab the shaft tightly with a pair of pliers to keep the shaft from rotating as you attempt to turn the knob.

If that doesn't work, the shift knob in my car has a ring at the base of knob that screws off and exposes 3 small set screws.
