Checking the fliuds under the bonnet, noticed the selespeed transmission oil is starting to get low, though not below min,Looking in the handbook its says i need tutela cs speed oil, is there another option or is a visit to my local dealer needed to pick some up, any help would be welcome thanks (y)

Shop4parts.co.uk do it quite cheap.

You need to select Alfa 156 Mk1, then got Fluids & Lubricants, then go to Transmission and select CS Selespeed Oil.

They're a fantastic bunch; give them a go (y)

Related to this thread...
I notice in the handbook under 'Capacities' that the Selespeed is shown as having the CS oil - and no other oil for gearbox/final drive (the manual gearboxes use a 75W gear oil).

Does this mean that the Selespeed uses the CS oil, from that tank in the engine bay, to lubricate the gears and diff as well? In other words, there is no other fill point and no other level to check? Good, if that's the case, based on my past experience with FIAT gearboxes. They usually wear/become noisy due to neglect in checking/filling the oil.

Or (other possible scenario) is that the CS oil is used only for the hydraulics (gear selectors) and there is still a conventional gear oil in the box itself? Could someone please clarify?

Thanks,
-Alex

The CS oil is for the selespeed actuator unit - the gearbox is still of the conventional type and has the same gear oil as a manual.

Also there is a set procedure for checking the fluid level of the selespeed unit - IIRC you have to open the door, pump primes, then turn the ignition on, the pump operates again then the level is checked in the resevior.

Thanks fiattech,
it is indeed really confusing since even FIAT don't seem too sure in the documentation, but I noticed in the eLearn CD that the Tutela Synth 75 is recommended for the C531 manual transmission. The only Stilo that uses the C531 seems to be the Selespeed, so in a roundabout way I found the same answer that you gave me :) even though the handbook was no use and the 'Transmission Oil' section about the Selespeed failed to mention it...
