Ok hung up my spanners for the night.
Pumping the throttle didn't work and nor did removing the petrol cap in case there was an airlock as Pandamaniac suggested, so I fitted a new exhaust to rest my brain.
Refreshed from exhaust repair I decided to gravity feed fuel into the pump. So I attached a pipe with a funnel to the inlet of fuel pump and poured in some fuel.
My brother turned the ignition whilst I held the funnel, a bit of gargling later and it started, pretty well too. I kept pouring fuel in and it was even idling ok (before it would stall with out the throttle being worked).
So I reconnected the fuel pump to the petrol tank and it started, and kept running. Just to check all was well I disconnected the fuel pipe to the carb and it was merrily pumping fuel out. So it works!!! sort of....
I went for a drive and it seems much better, but it stalls with the choke all the way in, so I cranked up the tickover screw and it doesn't stall but the revs hunt a lot.
I'm also surprised it didn't self prime, my guess(/hope) is the pump seals in the spare I fitted are a bit dry from sitting around for ages and needed a bit of encouragement. I'm also hoping that's why it wasn't idling right and that sitting over night in petrol will reguvinate them. The real questions are:
Will it start easily tomorrow from cold?
Will the lumpy idle have gone?
Will Batman escape the Joker's fiendish trap?
Find out tomorrow, same place, same time!!!
