Ok...back on topic..
Got a new dizzy vac to try....hows things with your probs Nitro???????

(Still very very well done and funny...been laughing all weekend)

To answer your first question, "did air make a difference?" short answer is no!

But! I have made in interesting discovery....

I was trying to start the car yesterday, but it was having none of it, even with jump leads connected giving it some plenty of spark. Regardless of what i did choke in/out throttle up/down, nothing, didn't even splutter a little.
Then I discovered if i pump the throttle rapidly 20-30 times before starting it will fire immediatly, doesn't idle when cold though but will keep going if I keep pumping the throttle. Once warm it will idle but the revs hunt a lot(been getting worse).
Sounds to me like the fuel pump is on the way out????
Or does the throttle just pump fuel from the float chamber, suggesting something wrong with the carb???? What do you reckon????

In the meantime the exhaust has broken so need to fix that too *sigh*

Jeez Nitro...everyone seems to be having probs!!!!! Yours seem to be non stop!!!(n):bang:

Simple way of testing pump is to take off the pipe put it in a bottle and turn the car over????? Or am i being to simplistic????
Have you a inline fuel filter?????

Fitted the new vac to the dizzy £17.50 (old vac seemed a little stiff on inspection)
Runs better but still hunting on tickover.:bang::bang:..but not as much.

Like i say better though......but still not there!!!!....kev

Been fiddling about today, not having much luck:
I removed the fuel filter - no change.
I changed the float - no change.

but then!

I took the fuel inlet pipe off the carb and turned the engine over and no fuel came out the pipe. I compared it with my project car and it pumps loads of fuel out. So it stands to reason I have a broken fuel pump, I took the fuel pump from my spare engine (was running when I took it out) and fitted it but it still no fuel appears

As i sit here typing, maybe i need to prime it? Doesn't mention it in the Haynes or Porter manual, not sure how one would prime it? I guess reconnecting it and pumping the throttle?
I'll go and try that and report back. In the meantime if you have any suggestion regarding no fuel being pumped fire away.

And yes there is fuel in the tank!

3 things.

1) Lumpy running can be caused by a typical fiat problem of burnt valves on one of the cylinders.

2) Any chance you have got an airlock from the petrol cap / tank.

3) Possibly kinked fuel pipe

Ok hung up my spanners for the night.

Pumping the throttle didn't work and nor did removing the petrol cap in case there was an airlock as Pandamaniac suggested, so I fitted a new exhaust to rest my brain.

Refreshed from exhaust repair I decided to gravity feed fuel into the pump. So I attached a pipe with a funnel to the inlet of fuel pump and poured in some fuel.
My brother turned the ignition whilst I held the funnel, a bit of gargling later and it started, pretty well too. I kept pouring fuel in and it was even idling ok (before it would stall with out the throttle being worked).
So I reconnected the fuel pump to the petrol tank and it started, and kept running. Just to check all was well I disconnected the fuel pipe to the carb and it was merrily pumping fuel out. So it works!!! sort of....

I went for a drive and it seems much better, but it stalls with the choke all the way in, so I cranked up the tickover screw and it doesn't stall but the revs hunt a lot.

I'm also surprised it didn't self prime, my guess(/hope) is the pump seals in the spare I fitted are a bit dry from sitting around for ages and needed a bit of encouragement. I'm also hoping that's why it wasn't idling right and that sitting over night in petrol will reguvinate them. The real questions are:

Will it start easily tomorrow from cold?
Will the lumpy idle have gone?
Will Batman escape the Joker's fiendish trap?
Find out tomorrow, same place, same time!!!

Arse.

Wouldn't start without pumping the throttle this evening, (at least i'm getting a knack) and the idle is still lumpy. Could be that my spare fuel pump is a bit tired like the last one but seems like a bit of a coincidence. Going to wait till tomorrow when the engine is cold and see if the pump is drawing fuel ok before starting the engine. If it doesn't i'll order a new pump if it does i'm really struggling for ideas. :(

Pump on ebay at the moment..not sure if its a good price??
Sorry have not checked the manual but is there a pump in the tank as well???? Still cant fit my clutch rain rain rain...its getting on my tits!!!!
