Greetings Fiat Forum members. I've just purchased a Fiat Panda from a neighbour. The car failed it's MOT due to severe corrosion of the rear axle and rear drum brake backplates. It was heading for the scrap yard but I bought it and intend to invest a lot of time and some money to put it back into service. I'm encouraged by the low VED , £35 per year , so I'm gathering parts for it and hope to start the work after Christmas.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you can do your own repairs. A new axle unit is only £150 these days and will resotore the rear end with a bit of muscle. VED is such a waste of money so worth having a car that doesnt cost much. Good luck with the project.

welcome to you! very doable job just takes time and effort( might have to fight some of the bolts) give a good soaking in release fluid( id do it every day the week before you start work) plenty of folk on here have done it so help available if/when you need it! PS keep a blowlamp to hand in case you need to apply heat to anything stubbon!.

Hi and welcome :) Great to hear she's being saved.

If it's got that rusty I would also have a close look at:
Rear sills
Bump stop turrets
Oil sump pan
Coolant return pipe behind exhaust manifold
Exhaust bracket below cat
Mud trap behind front springs

The main body is galvanised so rust shouldn't be too extensive, but it sounds like this one has lived in a fairly aggressive environment.

Hello and thank you so much for these zones to inspect. The car lives near to the coast so will get the odd coating of salt spray.
I now have a new reinforced rear axle, back plates, coil springs and shocks. The chassis does look to be in vgc so hopefully the job I'm embarking on shouldn't throw up too many headaches!
