When I press the clutch pedal a loud rattling noise comes from the engine. I've been told it's not the clutch and that they think teeth are missing from the gearbox :dunno:

Is this the likely problem? Also what's the fix for this or do I need a whole new gearbox?

Yhh it still makes a noise then, is it definitely not the gearbox or will I not know until I open it all up?

Certainly worth checking the gearbox oil level (although Puntos don't tend to loose it in quite such a dramatic fashion as the olde Pandas!).

Generally, though, if noise goes away with the clutch up, in neutral, engine running, it's the clutch thrust bearing (fit new 3 part clutch kit).

Normally I'd agree, but OP states rattling, thrust bearing is more a rubbing groan from experience.

could be timing belt adjuster
water pump
clutch release bearing
clutch diaphragm
gearbox first motion shaft
diff drop
etc

cant be diagnosed via tinternet
put your google glasses on and do us a real life download via zorb :D

if its rattleing when clutch pressed is more likely to be torque / tension springs had it a few times, they are the 4 springs in the picture.
when you press peddle in the pressure plate releases the friction plate so it can spin free.
the centre hub which sits on the gearbox input shaft is not actualy connected to the friction plate but is loose in the middle the springs are mounted loose between the friction disc and centre hub when new they are long enough to press between both all the time but over time the forces on them shorten them causing them to rattle round in thier holders, the reason they dont rattle when your driving is because they are held by the drag from the gearbox . if you took the springs out you would lose all drive as the hub would rotate freely in the friction plate.
the purpose of the prings is to compress slightly when abusive clutch operations occur other wise the hub would shatter or strip input shaft, sort of shock absorbers for your clutch
only cure is new clutch

Really hoping it's a new clutch I need, I'll probably get rid of the car if it's the gearbox :(
I've heard it's the clutch release bearing which is cheap to fix or its the gearbox bearings to which I was quoted £650 for a reconditioned clutch!

Got it booked in to get stripped Wednesday so fingers crossed

someone is seriously trying to rip you off
best clutch to fit is a LUK they are the only ones that work properly in fiats, I know have fitted hundreds, cheaper ones drag and judder or dont clear at all.
you should be looking at about £200 - £250 fitted brand new clutch from independant garage, if you cant find one try a gearbox reconditioners that do fitting when they are quiet they will happily do a clutch fitting as they do them all day long we used to do a panda / punto in a couple of hours, ( fastest was a micra / sunny 20 mins slowest was peugeot 405 with torque tube, rear axle dropped 4 hours)
hope this helps
new LUK clutch will cost you about £105 + fitting

Sorry I meant reconditioned gearbox lol, that's why I'm hoping its the clutch

My guess is he means gearbox.

But I've never had any trouble with Valeo/Sachs (which are the OE ones). Around £50, the clutch jockeys here do them in an hour and a half for about £110.

I like Valeo ones, but too many recon ones being passed off as new, dont accept anything in a plain white box
think your spot on with the fitting price :worship::worship:

How much do you think I should be paying for a gearbox if that's the problem?
