Technical punto mk2 help needed pls

new to here so hello everyone just hope someone can help me , got er indoors a 2000 mk 2 1.2 8v punto in may i changed cam belt exhaust brakes all round and found there a joy to work on , we have 4 in the family and have done most of the jobs on them myself , head gasket , sump , water pump , radio , brakes , but this has got me beat , she stalled the car the other night and it wouldnt start up , she got a jump start parked it up over night came out the next day and nothing i said it could be that she is doing small trips and not putting the power back into the battery and it needs a good run , jump start again but now no wipers or lights and indicators and it turns over very slowly , spent all day today cleaning all the earth straps i could find battery on charge all day while i did the checks fuses ok , battery is only a few weeks old as the old one was going flat all the time , now it wont start even jumping it of my van no lights wipers , if i work the washers the headlights flash ? and turn the indicators on the head lights flash ? very strange , proper head scratcher , any help would be great .paddy

did that , engine to chassis , negative to engine and chassis , cleaned the ones on the inner wing , gearbox , and boot , but no good , thanks for the reply

fitted new starter today and fires up no problem , but no wipers or lights , fuses are all ok ,

Poor connection at earth point E5 in RH footwell could affect city switch, headlights, indicators, fog lights, cigar lighter, electric mirrors, HRW, wash/wipe, radio, electric windows.

Hello all.
I am not a mechanic but I love my fiat punto 188 MK2 (ZFA5000) 2002.
This car has a city button for lighter power steering. When you press the city button, a light comes on the dashboard that says CITY, and the steering becomes lighter.

PROBLEM (S):

Everyone once in a while when it rains the power steering light (red steering wheel) turns on, and then it goes away on its own. I know this is intermittent , not my biggest issue, just adding for context.

Another piece of information for context is that sometimes the gearbox light turns on and the brake clicks. Again only after heavy rain. I have learned this is due to corrosion located at the rear light cluster connection pin. The seal isn’t great so water might get through. Once the corrosion on the final connector pin of the light cluster is removed , the light goes away and brake stops clicking.


MAIN ISSUE:
Beginning yesterday, after turning the car on, the city light began flickering on the dashboard - affecting steering sensitivity.
When I long press and hold down the city button , the light goes away and the gearbox light (as above) flashes. This began after a hail storm.


I have a VAGCOM/KKL cable with switches , and a ELM 337 tool from eBay,
I use the multiecu scan tool normally, but can’t make it work for the power steering light, I don’t know how to make it work .
I get a message which says ELM327/ODBKey Interface or can’t find COM3.

I just want the light to stop and the problem to go away.

My non-mechanic mind thinks an electrical glitch maybe an earth problem (not something I can verify but just a feeling I have based on the erratic nature of the light).

Please can you guide me and help me

Hi mate, I love my old Punto too it's just fab. Maybe a moderator can help but I believe the best thing to do is to start a new thread with info in the title that way folks can see the issue your having. Good luck dude.
