General Punto gt erratic idle

Hi new member here, I've tried to post this already but it obviously didn't work.

I recently saved a Punto gt from someone's garden. After much cleaning I got the engine started but it was idling from 1000-3000 rpm and trying to stall.

I changed the idle control valve but this made no difference.

When I changed the plugs and leads it idled from 1500-2500 rpm but it was a lot smoother and stopped miss firing.

I've searched the Internet and forums so please don't think I've jumped in with a common problem and no done no research.

Only thing I haven't check is the boost pipes, I've had a quick look but not in detail.

I also got 2 engines with the car but there different, I'm guessing the idle control is on the inlet on later models.

The car is a 96 model with 99k on the clock. Doubt it's anything to do with it but the dials don't work except the rev counter (not sure about the speedo because I haven't driven it) all fuses are fine as well.

Obviously you have tried a few known culprits. Being an oldy now I'd imagine the boost hoses may not be in the best of health so smoke/boost test. Air flow meter? Then of course most if not all of these cars suffered from cracked manifolds one way or another, this will not help matters.

Failing all, get the codes read. Best of luck..

It does not have OBD.

How do I read the codes then ? I did read something where a light flashes and you get the code that way.

I'm aware they used to do a blink test, not too sure of all the ins&outs, but have a look on puntosports forum they will have all the answers.

erratic idle if not idle control valve on most cars means a leak on the intake. so check all the intake pipework after the MAF and all the vac lines for splits etc.

Blink test is pretty simple, you bridge 2 connectors and the engine management light blinks out codes which you then look up.. There is a diagnostics pot in the engine bay and you bridge 2 of the connectors or ground one of them or something - been a long time since i had my GT.. Its on PuntoSports but i dunno if the proper guide bit is in the part that only paid up members can access.. I have detailed instructions on a different computer so if you can't find it let us know and I'll try dig it out when at my laptop with all my files on.
